I bought this thinking it would be just like installing an internal DVD drive. Wrong.
The hardware is simple to install and will take minutes. It's the software that is the key to the problems people have. The cyberlink power dvd 8 which comes with this drive really does work but I had to (unbend) the defective software disc first. I did this by applying heat to the DVD which flattened it enough for the disc to be read by the drive.
Most people wouldn't have tried this and would have been stuck with a dead drive. (would still play dvd's).
The software is the kind I hate (blotted and limited); but it does allow you to play blu rays.
The reasons for all these problems with internal blu ray drives is quite simply this: Microsoft backed HD DVD and wanted that format to succeed with its XBOX 360. They sided with Toshiba against blu ray but blu ray won the battle and HD DVD is effectively dead. Because microsoft is still a big baby it won't allow the codecs to be developed that would enable windows media player to simply work with Blu Rays (it's the future microsoft, wake up!!).
Microsoft also hate JAVA and JAVA are big players in the blu ray camp - developing much of the software that enables external blu rays to function properly.
So it is microsoft who have made internal blu ray drives so difficult and limited in software.
In the journey to find software (before I "ironed out" my cyberlink powerdvd 8 disc); I installed 5 trial versions of legitimate blu ray "players". None of them worked and my system became infected with a virus. I've had to reinstall windows 7 and noticed that a lot of people are turning to illegal software in order to get blu ray functions on their computers.
My drive is working and it is fast and quiet. You'll have no problems if you have an internet connection (the software has to update itself in order to play blu rays), otherwise you'll be stuck.
This is a great drive but it is the limited software available to enable blu ray playback that is the problem. My advice is not to pay for any program - because it is inevitable that microsoft will have to give people blu ray functionality in windows 7. (once they grow up).
Stick with cyberlink dvd 8 because easy playback with FULL functionality is just around the corner. Phew......someone get me a darkened room.

The drive itself is great, it's a fairly average piece of kit. HOWEVER be warned! There are no open source BluRay players yet, this in itself is not an issue, except all the current software available is totally rubbish! With DVDs you can skip your way through those annoying copyright notices and those unskippable trailers thanks to gems like VLC or mplayer - with bluray, not so much. When Disney insist you must sit through trailer after trailer and a dozen legal notices, you have to put up with it. Also, PowerDVD (which is the software packaged with the drive) turns off 'aero' (the transparent bit in Windows Vista/7) whenever you play a BluRay, this itself is extremely irritating. I have a feeling this may be a DRM requirement.

To purchase software to fix the last issue listed above will cost more than the drive itself. No matter what internal drive you buy at the moment you will have the same issue. If you have been on the fence, I suggest waiting another 12 months until the software situation improves.

Its been mentioned before and worth mentioning again that the software this drive comes with 'POWERDVD 8' is TERRIBLE. Doesn't play the latest Blurays, just doesn't recognise them at all. It's a pretty poor. For anyone confused by this standard media players which play DVDs don't play Blu Rays, you need special software to do it and well, its a limited market out there.

I would definitely buy the drive, easy to install SATA drive and works well. You can always download Media Player Classic which plays Blu Rays and unlike Powerdvd actually works.

There's not much to say about a bare drive, it either works or it doesn't. This one definitely does work and is moderately quiet whilst it does so.

Just two things to bear in mind:

1/ The drive comes supplied with a SATA data cable, so if you have a SATA power plug available in your PC then there is no need for any more cables.

2/ The PowerDVD 10 software supplied will deliberately not play Blu-ray disks that have copyright protection, i.e. most commercially produced Blu-ray disks. So, not very useful and a waste of 30 minutes installing and trying it.

Where do I begin?
1. Unsupported by Liteon - no drivers beyond Windows 7
2. If you want to play new Blu Rays you have to spend over £50 to upgrade Cyberlink
3. Doesn't write to anything. Most DVD readers will write to CD so I expected this to write to DVD and CD. Nope
4. Enormously frustrating trying to get it to play any Blu-rays. I've managed to watch 1 film in all the time I've owned this
5. All the DRM is forcing people to rip off films. After buying a player and software you find they won't play the latest releases unless you pay a hefty ransom for updated software

The only way forward without spending on constant upgrades is to buy a separate domestic player and give up on the internal drive (the Liteon won't work on Win 8 or Win 10), or start illegally downloading. Frankly I've given up on Blu-ray on a computer. Apple were right to say they will never support it - it's not fit for purpose if your purpose is watching films. It's too painful. The Liteon implementation has been abandoned - good luck finding drivers for this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bien
Reviewed in France on 21 February 2014

5.0 out of 5 stars Gutes und günstiges Laufwerk - Firmwareupdate notwendig!
Reviewed in Germany on 7 January 2012

Klare Kaufempfehlung!
