Possibly similar to a lot of buyers I bought this to go with my netbook computer. It gives a lot more flexibility to my netbook and means that I don't have to transfer CD's / DVD's to a memory stick using a desktop so that I can access them from the optical drive-less netbook. The unit is very compact at around 14cm x 14cm and 2cm thick. It comes supplied with a short (20cm) USB cable that clips in to a storage recess on the base of the drive when not in use; nice touch! Performance seems good and it claims to be able to burn double layer DVD's - I've not tried this feature yet. You don't need to worry about installing any software to use the drive, just plug it in to an XP / Vista / Windows 7 machine and it's ready to go. I did wonder if it might drag too much power from the USB socket on my netbook as some older external hard drives do but this hasn't happened and the drive seems to work fine even when the netbook is running on its battery. A copy of Nero Esentials software comes supplied with the drive but I've not bothered to install it as the free software InfraRecorder does most of what I need. The only negative I can say about the drive is it's made from an easily scratched plastic. The gloss black finish seems to show up every little scratch and fingerprint.

Well as an Apple laptop user, who's realised that Apples vaunted reliability does not always extend to their DVD drives (having had 3 fail over recent years), this little gem is perfect (it really is little - being the size of two CD cases on top of each other).

It worked directly out of the box, connecting quickly via it's included short* USB cable to my Macbook Pro (the cable handily stows in a recessed slot in the base of the unit - very tidy, and ensures it's not lost if transferring the drive in a carry bag etc.

I have both read and written DVD's using the drive, its reasonably quiet, and extremely easy to use.. Highly recommended, both for use with a PC or with a Mac (ideal for adding DVD capability to a MacBook Air or other modern slimline laptop with no internal DVD drive).

* The supplied cable is very short, so that it will fit into the L shaped recess in the unit, however if you really do need a longer on, it's a standard mini USB connector on the DVD drive itself - so you will very likely have a longer cable kicking around, and if not they are easily an cheaply purchased on Amazon.

I'm not sure what issues my fellow iMac-owners were having with this drive but it works perfectly well with the new late-2012 iMacs (which have no internal optical drive) as well as with older Macs and PC's - and it's a fraction of the price of Apple's own SuperDrive. There are a couple of Mac foibles, but these are true of any optical drive used with OSX: Firstly, unlike Windows, Mac's never (visibly) mount an empty optical drive on the desktop, so don't expect the icon for a DVD drive to appear when you first connect the drive - you won't 'see' the drive until there's a disc inside it. Second, the STOP button on the front edge of this drive (which stops the discs spinning) becomes a bit redundant when used with a Mac because you have to un-mount the disc on your Mac (drag the disc icon to the Trash) to stop it spinning and allow you to remove it from the drive. Note that the short USB cable supplied with the drive is not quite long enough to allow the drive to sit on the aluminium foot of your iMac - you'll need to find something longer, the manual recommends that you avoid using cables over 40cm long. It's also a good idea to avoid connecting disc burners to your computer using USB hubs, give them the clearest data path by connecting directly to the computer itself if possible.

Basic disc burning facilities are built into OSX, just put a blank disc into the drive and its icon will appear on your desktop ready for you to fill then burn. If you want to burn a wider range of disc types you'll need to install extra software - this drive comes with Nero disc-burning software for Windows and Linux only.

This started off okay. It was cheap and worked well. But within three or four months of fairly light use, it started to die, supposedly coming across more and more 'damaged' areas on the discs, until it could read almost nothing. I've had to stop using it.

Disappointing.

The reason I have bought the Liteon DVD/CD re-writer was due to the fact that my DVD/Lightscribe writer in my HP Pavilion dv7-2230SA Entertainment laptop would not recognize burned Verbatim DVD+R (16x, 100 Cake) in my DVD players. I did try to get the latest firmware from HP and from Microsoft (Windows 7 driver update) to overcome the problem but I found that I had the latest.

NB. In contrast, Emtec DVD+R disks worked perfectly.

The burner software I use is Imgburn (Freeware off the net) which I have found to be terrific.

For the review :-

I placed the order with Amazon on a Wednesday and it arrived on Saturday morning (using the standard Free delivery). Thank you Amazon.

The writer has a black gloss finish, which is very classy to look at but can be easily get smudged by fingertips. No problem.
The writer is powered by the PC using one USB cable. The length from end-to-end is about 21cm. I agree with some other reviewers that this is short (particularly if your laptop is not sited on a desk) - I accepted this issue before I decided to buy it. The supplied USB cable can be stowed away under the writer when not in use.

There is one mini USB connector (connecting to the writer) whilst the other end is a standard USB connector. I initially tried to use a mini USB connector from my Samsung Story hard drive but this wouldn't fit because of the wider plastic moulding around the connector.
Luckily I had another mini USB cable from a digital camera. This works fine.
I connected this to the laptop and it was instantly recognized by Windows 7 and installed at the necessary drivers automatically.
The disks are loaded using the top cover.
