Review

‘They are, without exception, the work of an experienced and artful cook.’
Times Literary Supplement

From the Back Cover

Twelve tantalising cases… the curious disappearance of Lord Listerdale; a newlywed’s fear of her ex-fiancé; a strange encounter on the train; a domestic murder investigation; a mild man’s sudden personality change; a retired inspector’s hunt for a murderess; a young woman’s impersonation of a duchess; a necklace hidden in a basket of cherries; a mystery writers arrest for murder; an astonishing marriage proposal; a soprano’s hatred for a baritone; and the case of the Rajah’s emerald.

All have one thing in common: the skilful hand of Agatha Christie.

Agatha Christie was born in Torquay in 1890 and became, quite simply, the best-selling novelist in history. She wrote 80 crime mysteries and collections, and saw her work translated into more languages than Shakespeare. Her enduring success, enhanced by many film and TV adaptations, is a tribute to the timeless appeal of her characters and the unequalled ingenuity of her plots.

Excellent listening. I was amazed at the marvellous reading by Hugh Fraser. It is nearly word for word as the book of the same title and a wonderful companion when alone.

This is an entertaining collection of short stories - none of which feature Christie's famous detectives. They are just as well written and intriguing as the novels. I particularly liked the title story which has an unexpected ending and is charming rather than frightening. Philomel Cottage, however, will send shivers down your spine.

In this book Christie shows what a versatile writer she was. There is humour and believable psychological motivations. The characters come to life on the page even though none of these stories are long. They are darker than Christie is generally thought to be. Too many people dismiss her as being a lightweight detective story writer who wrote books featuring either an eccentric and fussy Belgian detective or a prissy spinster.

Such judgements are facile in the extreme and show a lack of knowledge of the breadth and depth of her writing. It also misjudges both Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple. This collection of twelve short stories would be a good introduction to Christie's work and shows her at her versatile best. Hugh Fraser is an excellent narrator in this and other audio editions of Christie's work.

A more than usual light-hearted blend of thrills and spills from the Queen of Crime written to appease the 1920s magazine market. Several have been filmed, including Philomel Cottage - which was first adapted as a play by Frank Vosper, retitled Love from a Stranger, and later filmed with Joan Hickson and Basil Rathbone. Swan Song is an enjoyable operatic tale of revenge. A reoccuring theme throughout several of the stories is a penniless couple forced to employ their wits to enjoy themselves when their finances don't stretch far enough - rather like the early days of Agatha and her first husband Archie. Enjoy!

Those who can do, those who can't criticize.

I love Agatha Christie she never fails to surprise. One of the few authors to have been consistantly good and still fresh after all these years.

For lovers of Agatha Christie these short stories show a different side to her writing abilities using only a few pages to draw you in and keep the suspense going you don't get the gradual build up as with her stand alone novels but do get a chance to see other aspects to her writing great for a winters evening or for those times when you want to quickly lose yourself in a story
