Lights is a little known artist in the UK but is growing into a sensation. Her first full length album, The Listening, features songs from her debut EP (self titled Lights EP) such as favourites "Drive My Soul" and a tweaked version of "Ice". Light's vocal range, synth beats and piano playing provides a great mix of both slow, poignant songs such as "Pretend" and energized dancey ones such as "Saviour" and "February Air". This lovely Canadian keytar player (I met her at a recent gig in London, she really is lovely) is gonna make it big soon so get this album full of optimism, hope and pure joy.

The début album from Canadian singer LIGHTS is a fun listen. Upon first hearing her single 'Ice' on the internet, I was not sure whether I liked the sound of her voice or not,I first considered it slightly irritating, but after a few listens I became accustomed to it and found I really enjoyed her songs. Sure, the lyrics may not be the best ever written, but the key to LIGHTS' music is that she creates very catchy melodies using that keytar of hers.

From this album, I would say that essential listens would be 'Saviour', 'Drive My Soul', 'Second Go' and 'Quiet', although there is not essentially a bad song on the album, personally I feel the weakest are 'Face Up' or 'River', mainly because they do not have the immediate impact that on the listener that is made by the other songs.

LIGHTS is rather original in her sound, the only artist that comes to mind that is remotely similar is Owl City, although if you are not a fan of his songs, don't let the potential similarity put you off from having a listen. I also own the LIGHTS Acoustic, which is also worth a listen, as the songs 'River' and 'February Air' certainly shine more accompanied by only an acoustic guitar, and her newest single 'My Boots', which is likely to be on her second album and is an essential listen as it is immediately more catchy than some of the songs on 'The Listening'. LIGHTS is probably one of my favourite discoveries this year and I can't wait to hear what she puts out next!

After hearing Saviour on the radio I sought out this album to hear the rest of LIGHTS' work.

I am very pleased with this album.

Bouncy synth beats mixed with LIGHTS' incredible voice makes this the album perfect to listen to in any kind of mood, whatever your'e doing.

At first you might not think this album is that special but after listening to it a couple of times you won't stop listening to it.

This is the follow up full length album to her excellent self titled 2008 EP (four of the six tracks from that EP are included here) and it is just gorgeous. This wouldn't be my normal musical fayre as electro-pop can be very boring but there's not a single bad track on this album. She has a very quirky but silky voice and some of the tracks send shivers down my old spine. It reminds me of hearing Wendy Morgan (from the Popguns) for the first time and although their voices are nothing alike both have an indescribable quality which turns my legs to jelly...perhaps i need to see a doctor??. She does sometimes use a vodacoder (or similar) which i don't normally like (too much like Cher!!) but it actually works well on those particular songs and sometimes musically the synths start to sound a bit too 80's retro but then she pulls these small lapses back from the brink of banality with her exquisite voice and lovely lyrics. The album finishes with her singing over a lone piano and this is definitely the way forward for her...sublime.

This has to be one of my favourite albums of 2009. The tunes are all so catchy and really well produced. The album is incredibly unique and there really isn't anything out there like this at the moment. Lyrically these tracks are poetic, different and sometimes just a bit wierd but it all comes together really well for an uplifting sound focusing on electro pop / alternative rock influences. Overall this is such a fun album that can be enjoyed by anyone who likes a unique edge to thier playlist.

I bought this for my teenage son but was totally smitten within the first day! Very melodic and sweet. My other teenagers said that they thought it was somewhat same-y but I think that the 'sound' she has, works very well for her, and so 'why fix it if it's not broken?' as the saying goes. This cd always makes me feel good and that's what music is all about isn't it?

I bought this on the strength of hearing just one song (Ice) and i'm so glad i did, this album is superb, filled with quirky lyrics and sounds you'd not really expect from such a young artist.

This girl is going to be big.

I can't recommend this cd highly enough.
