Depth of spiritual practice is often judged by its complexity but Jim Pym argues that in fact simplicity is of greater value.
Quaker simplicity and silent worship is closely related to ideals of peace and social improvement, and the aim of the Quaker life is 'to give people that state of inner peace where war, violence and injustice cannot exist.'
Pym's previous background in catholicism and buddhism help give the book depth and wisdom. Both established Quakers and those interested in learning more will find this book extremely valuable.
I love this book and have read large parts of it several times.

Jim Pym has managed to write an extraordinarily personal and thorough introduction to the Quaker way of life. I am not sure whether it was meant to serve as an introduction; however, it may certainly be read as such.

Having read Listening to the Light, I now see Friends (Quakers) and Quaker Worship in a different light. Suddenly, I understand things which I have so far spent quite a few years trying to comprehend.

It is a very simple presentation, very warm. I will definitely keep reading it again and again, and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in Quakerism.

On reaching the last page, I went straight back to the first. And then again.

This is the introduction to Quakerism I was hoping for when I purchased another book. The other turned out to be a good book, this is a much better introduction.

Really nice, easy read, but very informative. I love it. It also contains Advices and Queries, a core piece of Quaker text.

Highly recommended.

The sub-title suggests the purpose of the book: ‘How to bring Quaker simplicity and integrity into our lives’. Jim Pym came to Quakers from Catholicism, via Buddhism, and still describes himself as ‘a Buddhist and a Quaker’ (his form of Quakerism being of the liberal, non-programmed variety). He has been a professional musician, and a publisher and seller, as well as a writer, of Quaker books. Most introductions to Quakers that I’ve read are worthy volumes but, I must say, a little dry for my taste. They tend to be very matter of fact and ‘out there’. Jim Pym ‘s personality and life experience are very much present in this introduction to Quakers and Quaker ways, and a delightfully warm and engaging presence it is.

He identifies three strands in the book - the first ‘personal and even autobiographical’, the second ‘about Quakerism and about Quakers’, the third being something of a ‘how to...’ in that ‘it suggests ways in which you may incorporate ideas into your own life’.

The ‘about Quakers’ strand deals with principles and approaches rather than the nitty gritty of practicalities, but still manages to cover a lot of ground. He talks of meeting for worship as ‘the source from which everything else springs’, and strives to give some insight into ‘what Quakers have learned and experienced over the years’, touching on the idea of ‘that of God’, the implications of ‘the abolition of the laity’, and the importance of the testimonies, as well as processes such as meeting for worship for business, worship sharing, meetings for clearness, and weddings and funerals.

This has had the effect of reminding me of the everyday/extraordinary need to plug into the inner, often hidden light within.
Useful book to help touch a spiritual need if you can admit to having one!

Last year my curiosity let me to attend a Quaker meeting here in South West Scotland - I ventured in with an open mind to a warm welcome. Wanting to know and appreciate more I discovered Jim's book which, true to it's word gives a clear insight into Quaker Practice. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It closes with The Advices and Queries which are part of the core of the Quaker practice. I am grateful to you Jim for writing this book that has joined me on my Spiritual journey.
