Product description

Liquorice - Listening Cap

Liquorice could be thought of as possibly the most modest supergroup ever assembled: Jenny Toomey of Tsunami, Dan Littleton of Idha and Trey Many of His Name Is Alive embarking on a collaboration recorded in Warren DeFever's (also His Name Is Alive) basement. Far from being the obtuse, willfully inept, self-indulgent lo-fi waste of everyone's time that might have been anticipated, however, Listening Cap is a bright, engaging and entirely delightful album. The songs are, of necessity, roughly recorded, but the frayed edges suit them as well as they suit Toomey's witty and wordy lyrics. With a talent for the deadpan one-liner comparable with Liz Phair, she embarks on neat dissections of her own and her friends' relationships--the fantastically catty "Team Player" is as spectacular a character assassination as has been committed to album. Best of all is a beautifully bereft reading of "Keeping The Weekend Free", Franklin Bruno's poignant evocation of hopeful loneliness. --Andrew Mueller
