This book was spilt into two parts. In the first part we meet Penelope a woman who is at a crossroads in her life, after spending the last ten years of her life trying to be exactly who her husband Derek wanted her to be. Penelope is lost trying to find herself, whilst in a state of depression, she gave up everything to be with Derek.
So when she learns Derek has been cheating on her, she turns to pills, weed and alcohol. This phase of her life helps her realise what she needs to do to find herself again, Derek is no longer the man she thought he was and she's out to find herself again.
We see some reflection of Penelope's life with Derek before the end of their relationship,We see the signs of her journey from who she was and where she was to who and where she is now.
Part two, we see Penelope adjust to life after Derek, she's standing on her own feet helping her to find her way in life, she's got her own place, a job and is saving to realise her dream of becoming nurse. So when Penelope runs into Brandon Cain a hot tattooed, bearded bad boy bar tender, who used sell her weed.
Penelope never envisioned someone like him would be into her, but the more time she spends time with him the more she learns that she can be herself with Brandon. Her and Brandon's relationship is much different to the one with Derek, they agree to "no promises and no pretending".
You can't help but connect with Penelope and see how much she changes her life for the better and for herself, after so much healing and heartbreak. You'd think Brandon would be the perfect rebound guy, but he is more than that, he helps her become herself again, but in return she helped Brandon too.Read more ›
There was Romance, adultery and a very sexy hot male in Brandon but there was also sacrifice, hurt and addiction.
Penelope married Derek young, she sacrifices her dream of becoming a nurse to be Derek's 'perfect wife'. Years later after finding out he has had an affair, smoking weed, prescription medication and drink is her daily ritual. Penelope resents Derek, not only for cheating on her but for all she has forfeited for him and at thirty, she finds herself working hard to try and achieve her dreams.
Brandon, the hot ex marine bartender/drug dealer is introduced to Penelope through their mutual friend Tiffany. Penelope lacks confidence, there is fear in her eyes every time Brandon goes outside her comfort zone and she runs.
This is an amazing book, a book of trusting the right people and being brave enough to let go and follow your heart.
I couldn't put it down!
If you do only one thing this year, make sure you read this book! This was so much more than another romance. I was so drawn into it I didn't want to put it down, it had all the FEELS, I can't remember the last book that I felt this connected, this invested that I didn't want it to end. My heart genuinely ached for Penelope, the strength and perseverance she fought to find, her growth and rediscovery of her self worth made the journey she endured so much more real, relatable and consuming.
Derek had ignited a spark inside of my heart, a hope for a love I never expected to find. However, our connection lacked the substance it needed to burn. Weakened with resentment, our relationship crumbled under deception, slowly dissolving into ash.
"I'll love you forever, baby. You're my world. I could lose everyone else, but as long as I have you, I'll be happy"
I had sacrificed myself for him and paid the price.
By the time Brandon entered into my life, the longing in my heart had turned cold. But fate was not done with me. His crystal blue eyes and fluid touch revived a wish that had been frozen in time. He gave me hope once again.
"He looked at me, and in that moment, I instantly understood Tiffany's attraction to him. He had trouble and seduction in his eyes, and when they were aimed at you, it was hard not to fall victim to both."
Hope is a dangerous thing, especially when you dare to dream.Read more ›
Penelope hasn’t had a positive role model growing up, her mother wasn’t the best example for her but she didn’t allow that to stop her. She spent a long time just wallowing and not getting herself out there to be happy. She finds an inner strength to do something more with her life rather than just being the same old Penelope.
We get to see Derek and Penelope in flashbacks and we can see that at first they were happy but then things changed. Derek changed and as a result of his change, Penelope was also affected. Penelope also finds out that her man has been cheating on her. My heart broke for her because cheating just devalues you as a person, it makes you fell like you never counted because their attention and time was with another person. It is horrible and it was honestly one of those moments where my heart wanted to cry and I was hurting alongside Penelope.
I think the cheating was the last straw for Penelope and she decided enough was enough. Her inner strength came from the hurt and betrayal she experienced. This story is about Penelope more than anything else, it is about her finding out that she’s worth more than what other people think of her. She is worthy of love and for someone to love her unconditionally.
She learnt to take her own journey, this book is about her saying to herself. ‘I am worth so much more, I am more than enough!’
