Nelson DeMilleAn unforgettable debut....Well-written, fast-paced, great characters, fascinating plot, and a climax in the Swiss Alps that will give the reader a case of vertigo.

Lone survivor of Secret Service team hunts down the kidnappers who have got away with the US President while he himself is framed and hunted....
Quite like a Ludlum book this, and I did keep thinking that there were many elements of the story that I have read elsewhere, but having said that..
This is a very well told action thriller and while it is not overly original in concept, it is delivered very well, has a good pace to it and it is action packed.
Brad Thor will be a name to watch out for I suspect.

Ok whilst Matthew Reilly has the edge on excitement this guy hits you square on with the tension from chapter one. This is Thor's greatest novel and his first novel. The hero is cross between James Bond, Indianna Jones and John McLane. With an early chapter starting with the kidnapping of the presidents daughter with amazing ski-sets and shoot outs that wipe out near enough every special force commando but one this book really makes you chilly, the scenes running upto the end are so breathtaking that you feel that any minute you are going to fall off a mountain yourself. This is just amazing writing and anyone who loved the movie of the Eiger Sanction on the edge of the mountain should snap this up. Jack Ryan EAT YOUR HEART OUT.

If you liked this then get Takedown too.

If you are a fan of the great books by Vince Flynn (God rest his soul) or Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels, then you'd be forgiven for buying Brad Thor's first Scot Harvath novel, because so many people (including respected critics) have favourably compared this novel to the work of the aforementioned authors.
Oh dear. What can I say about the Lions of Lucerne? I really wanted to like it. I really did, but tonight I decided that enough is enough, and just about half way through the book, I have decided that life's too short to continue reading this poor book.
The President of USA has been kidnapped and our 'hero', who is one dimensional, obnoxious and happy to 'punch people's lights out' without much provocation, is probably going to sort the situation out. Frankly, I no longer care. Scot Harvath is not likeable and it's hard to believe that he's a highly trained Agent, who excelled as a Navy SEAL ... etc. etc.
Stick with Vincent Flynn's Mitch Rapp or Tom Cain's Carver, or Ben Coes' Andreas, Andy McNab's Nick Stone and so on. Please don't waste your time on Brad Thor!

If you like Vince Flnn or Lee Child I think you will like this series too.
Yes Scot Harvarth is too good to be true but thats why it is fiction. I have read them all now and thoroughly recommend them.
It is action all the way and I dont want to put the books down.

I read it quickly and quite enjoyed it, but it does not compare all that favourably with others of its type. Part of the problem is that I have not warmed to the character of Scot Harvath. I did however enjoy it enough to be reading the second in the series. Maybe Scot will develop into a more rounded character with greater appeal.

Given the hype over Brad Thor I expected great things. Unfortunately he didn't deliver. The main character - as an ex Seal - does some pretty stupid things for a so-called expert, and the end, in particular, seemed rushed and didn't work for me. There are other issues but just because I didn't enjoy it doesn't mean someone else would. In a nutshell I prefer Vince Flynn's "Mitch Rapp" series. Grittier and more realistic. RIP Vince.

I'll buy Thor's 2nd book in the series to see if there's an improvement and keep my fingers crossed.

If your not looking for high literature but want something that bowls along at a good pace this is the book for you. I always judge books like this on whether I finish them. I did and I got the sequel so I suppose I must have enjoyed it.
