Product Description

Product Description

Jason Wilson and Dave Swarbrick team up for 'Lion Rampant': a convention-busting folk-reggae epic. Special guests include Martin Carthy, Pee Wee Ellis and John Kirkpatrick. According to Canadian reggae artist (Dr) Jason Wilson, Scottish and Irish music arrived in Jamaica roughly simultaneously with mento and ska's slavery-borne African roots, playing an under-recognised role in reggae's evolution. He also identifies all these sounds as rebel music, the unifying concept behind 'Lion Rampant' with English fiddle icon Dave Swarbrick

I came to this album as a long standing fan of Dave Swarbrick and Folk music in general. This album is a wonderful mix of Reggae and Folk, and includes great versions of songs as diverse as Marleys No Woman, No Cry and Burn's my love is Like a Red Red Rose. Jason Wison was new to me, so I checked him out on Wikipedia - [...].
A great production all round, thoroughly recommended!

This is a folk album which breaks the mould in much the same way as do Bellowhead. In many ways the sound and style are reminiscent of Scottish and Irish folk rock bands. So we have a great mix of traditional songs with reggae rhythms and some schmaltz. All of which lifted this work in a more radio 2 appeal. Loved the arrangements and Roger Wilson's voice and the fuelling fiddles. Recommended.

Yes, it's an interesting take on some old tracks. Yes, it's interesting to hear Jason Wilson's vocals which are good. Yes, good to hear a mixture of traditional folk and reggae songs. Yes, there are some great names performing in this CD. But, oh dear, so very little of Dave Swarbrick on show; a great disappointment for Swarb fans. When he does show up it is clear all of the old skill, tone, speed and dexterity is on show. What a pity there is not more of him here. I shall be delving back into my Swarb archive for better recollections of this truly great artist. He will be very sadly missed.

This is a great album and so happy to see Swarb taking part in such an interesting project with Jason Wilson. The blend of Reggae and Scottish traditional and contemporary songs is brilliant. I also liked the interpretations of the old Fairport and Sandy Denny favorite - John the Gun as well as Wilson's take on Richard Thompson's Why Must I plead?
There is also some great instrumentation and excellent backing singers. The last song - Dick Gaughan's Sail on has some fine guitar by Jerry Donahue. I think it is amazing to think that Swarb is not only profoundly deaf and has a new pair of lungs yet he still produces a wonderful resonant sound - more power to his elbow!
