Robert McLellan (1907-1985) was born on Linmill and went on to become a playwright before writing in 'Lallans,' the language of Lanarkshire. 'Linmill Stories' were originally written for radio.
McLellan's writing is easy to read, despite being entirely in Lallans, in fact any English dialogue is enclosed in quotation marks, and he captures his characters' speech beautifully, the dialogue never jars. The stories are told without sentiment, even the sentimental scenes, but they are each comforting, feel-good tales and create a timeless picture of childhood. There is humour too and a close scrutiny in the detail of the workings of a Clyde Valley fruit farm over 100 years ago.
A walk along the Lanark Road reminded me of this book, read years ago and I had to get a hold of a copy. The book was everything I remembered. The actual Linmill, 'linen-mill' not 'linn-mill' still exists and this book was a delightful, joy-filled read, if not least for reminding me of so many forgotten words.
