That this unit works straight out of the package with no problems on my XP programme computer in needing no new drivers or programmes; it effectively doubles many computers USB port availability and allows plug in and play of new USB connections without hassle, and is great value for money is beyond dispute.
However be aware that while almost double the price of this item the comparable Targus Ultra Mini 4 Port Hub or other equivalents may be a better long term alternative if you want:
1. Better indications of full power up and port status (4 separate blue leds per each USB connection versus a hard to see single green for the hub here;
2. Better powering of more power hungry connections esp. MP3s and other high speed connections;
3. An extension lead which for desk top computers gives you much greater range and flexibility than the short lead here which will just let the hub clear the port connection (more marginal issue if you are laptop based).
This is good value if you want the basics, but may be found wanting if any of the above criteria are important to you.

I have to admit that as a fully paid up member of the 'Grey Army', I don't understand computers at all. So installing anything new onto my ex. works antique machine is usually a nightmare. My 8 year old nephew always has to rescue me.
The thought of adding a device to simplify all my USB connections gave me a few sleepless nights.
The Linksys USB Hub arrived in the post. After spending over half an hour removing all the packaging, and with my nephew on standby, I plugged it into the back of my computer, connected all the various USB leads, pressed the "on" button, and everything simply worked! Why can't it always be like that?
Got to hire a skip now to take away all the packaging.

I needed a compact USB hub because my PC is in the kitchen and I need to keep wiring and connections neat and tidy. The Linksys worked straight out of the box on my XP machine with no problems. However, the 4 port hub is on a small (5 cm) lead which means if you plug it into the USB port on the back of your PC (where most USB ports live), it is rather inaccessable. Fine if you do not intend swapping peripherals but a pain if you do.
It's compact size is ideal for laptop users or for desktop users that don't tinker!

I bought a laptop a while ago which only had one USB port. This was OK as I only had a USB mouse. But as always I bought a few more USB devices. At first I just swapped them when I needed, but this became a pain. The Linksys hub is so small it hardly takes up room on my desk, it doesn't need external power to work with my mouse and palm so is extremely useful (no extra power lead to plug in). It also has 4 ports so future proofs my need. If you do need more than 4 then you can always daisy chain another Linksys to give you 7 ports (doing this does need the power supply which isn't included, hence the 4 starts). If you do swap devices a lot and it's getting annoying I recommend the Linksys, it's not expensive, saves you a lot of hassle and is very compact.

For the price I cannot believe how easy and user friendly this is to fit.
3 steps to fit
1) Unplug your existing USB
2) Plug the 4 port hub in
3) Plug ther other USB leads into the hub
finished
couldn't be an easier way to expand the USB ports on any computer
great value

Easy to use. Economic price. Just follow instructions and off you go! Extra USB connections as quick as a wink. Can't speak for other operating systems, but works fine with Windows XP.

The only difficult thing about this product was opening the plastic packaging!
I plugged my CD burner and webcam into the hub and then into my laptop and that was it. Instantly recognised, no drivers, nothing.
Small enough to carry in the laptop bag too. Fantastic!
