Stumbled across this album while browsing the Amazon pages and it rekindled happy memories, both of the record itself, and of going to see the band back when I were a lad.

Chuffed to see that it had been expanded to a two-disc set, according to Amazon's track listing and the one review of the album, I ordered it and eagerly awaited arrival. As ever, Amazon's delivery promise was exceeded, with the package arriving three days prior to that which I'd previously been told to expect.

I was, however, a little disgruntled, on opening the package, to find that the expected double CD was, in fact, a single-disc - a straight repressing of the original album; not even the bonus of additional tracks.

Don't let that put you off buying, though. It's still good to relive one's youth - just don't expect to receive a double CD when you order this.

Charlie seems to have used the same marketing ploy as Roxy Music as far as their album covers are concerned: seductive scantily clad models. But like Roxy, Charlie's music deserves attention as well. This double CD contains Charlie's two best albums and if you're a fan of sophisticated mid 70's rock along the lines of Alan Parsons Project and Steely Dan you should check this out. Although the band hails from London, the music has a slick L.A. feel to it. Imagine a jazzier version of Foreigner. All the tunes are catchy and radio-friendly despite the relative obscurity of the band.

2.0 out of 5 stars Be warned! 30 April 2013

Although the title suggests a double CD of two Charlie albums, No Second Chance and Lines, there is, in fact, only Lines included here. I had No Second Chance on vinyl in the 1970s and was keen to hear it on CD format. No such luck. Lines is an inferior album and I regret the purchase. Never again, Renaissance.

3.0 out of 5 stars quality or nostalgic appeal? 4 Sept. 2006
By Scott B. Saul - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I will always have a place in my heart for this band because it reminds me of growing up in Chicago in the 1970's. Progressive radio staitions like WXRT would play bands on the fringe (like Charlie!)

They never became popular although their albums were always prominently displayed in record stores because they featured such hot, hot girls on the album covers. It was a good gimmick (just ask Roxy Music).

"Lines" I think, was their standout work.

The best song "She loves to be in love" did receive a little airplay. Other good songs off of the cd are "LA Dreamer", "Lifes So Cruel" and "I like to Rock and Roll". "Watching TV" is enjoyable because of references to (for the time) contemporary tv shows. A younger listener will have no idea as to the mention of those shows.

Charlie was made up of studio musicians. They had the chops but the songs did lack the a certain degree of heart and soul of a conventional band. Their music is in the same vein as mellow Steely Dan.

The music is certainly of fine quality but I do not think that anyone unfamiliar will be turned on to this group. If you are a 40 something, avid music fan that tried different music when you were young, then this will be very nostalgic since I am sure that the albums have been out of print for decades.

When I listen to this cd, I do not know if I dig the music or if it just makes me feel 16 again. You always will have an affinity for music from your youth!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best mid-seventies album you never owned!! 21 Oct. 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Original sales of this album were good, but should have been great. This is one of the five best examples of mid-seventies AOR. I have been looking for this CD for years. Terry Thomas writes some of the best lyrics of the mid-seventies. They are right up there with Kerry Livgren of Kansas. His songs are about life and experiences, though not as philosophical as Livgren's. His guitar work is stellar. The first chords of Johnnie Hold Back followed by the peel of drums gets your attention right away. I recall listening to the music the first few times though just for the enjoyment. As I became familiar with the lyrics, No Second Chance became indispensible!! The rhythm section is the tightest. Steve Gadd plays drums. He is a well known session drummer with a jazz background. His expertize and skill make this profound music enjoyable and exciting. He works better here than on his solo albums. Lines is a solid album. The lyrics and style are a bit more popular than the rockers and ballads of No Second Chance. Together, this is a five-star value.
