CD Like You Do - Best Of The Lightning Seeds Sony, Int'l, 4890342 Jewel Case 16 Track 1997

Amazon.co.uk

Given the diligent classicism of Ian Broudie's pop template--its borrowings from and canonisation of past "greats"--it's unsurprising how few risks he took. The "band" was conceived initially as a solo, studio project, and those early tracks--with their handmade, all-my-own-work feel--reveal him as an unwitting contemporary of The Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt, another practitioner of "music-box pop". However, as Broudie's vision opened up to accommodate other players, and the arrangements became looser, the songs lost a little of their fragility, became noticeably more joyous and celebratory. Complete with the obligatory bonus tracks (a previously-unreleased cover version of the 60s hit "You Showed Me" and two new songs, "What You Say" and "Brain Drain"), this compilation makes for an engaging journey, through which the only common factors are Broudie's unerring instinct for a good tune, and that plaintive sob of a voice. Pure, indeed. --Andrew McGuire

This album has the lot. From the moment you start it off, Go trough songs such as Life of Riley, Lucky You and Pure you realise you are really into the album. Then Ready or Not plays, say no more really. To finish with the all-time classic Three Lions '96 really shows what has been missing in the music industry today.
The only downpoints, if any, is Brian Drain & the overlong intro of Marvellous. That said there really isn't any sort of downfall on this album. If you buy one Lightning Seeds album buy this one. Another noticeable inclusion is a re-working of Waiting For Today To Happen which is really great.

Although it's rather a shame that a Greatest Hits album should also be the seeds' best one as well, it's the case with Like You Do. A few new songs to keep the punters interested, but the emphasis has to lie on some really catchy pop tunes that never really made the mark they should have done. Sugar Coated Iceberg and What If are two such tunes, songs that are well written musically and lyrically but unfortunately aren't chart winners. If you're a seeds fan you should get this because it's their best album. If you're not, then you should so you can see what you're missing out on. Britpop doesn't come any better than this, this album is 100% britpop but never made the same impact as bands like Blur and Pulp. The answer to the Blur vs. Oasis debate lies here: Lightning Seeds.

Not a great musical accomplishment, that will change the face of music maybe, but this collection of the hits of the Lightning Seeds is exactly what music should be -- fun, melodic and a pleasure to listen to. Great album

Amazing that that wonderful British pop sound (in the tradition of Soft Cell and Dexys Midnight Runners among so many others) still was going strong in the 90's.Joyful and smooth-music that really makes you feel good
My personal favourites are 'The Life of Riley' ,'Change','Waiting For Today to Happen','Pure','All IWant' and 'Three Lions' -the last which was written to inspire the England soccer team to win the 1998 World Cup

I was prompted to re-visit the Lightning Seeds by the use of 'Oh Lucky You' on a TV advert! Never a great fan at the time , I am pleased to remedy that later in life. All their hits come flooding back on a sea of memories, feeling familiar and comfortable. This is a first rate compilation at a good price. Obviously not for diehard fans, as they would have the original albums anyway. For those of us who just want to dip in and out of the hits and well known songs, it does the job precisely.

I wouldn't count myself as being the biggest fan of The Lightning Seeds, but do like several of their hits. This 16 track compilation contains all the tracks you would expect, including 'Marvellous', 'The Life Of Riley' and 'Lucky You'. There are songs included here from the band's first four albums, all released in the space of 1990-1996, making this set still fairly comprehensive. There are two tracks which might not seem so familiar to the casual listener, 'What You Say' and 'Brain Drain', which were recorded especially for this collection, and are just as engaging as the famous stuff.

In all, a great collection, capturing all the highlights of the group's writer, singer and guitarist Ian Broudie. The music is quirky, upbeat, relaxing, and typical of many British bands of the same contemporary like Shed Seven, Dodgy and Cast. I really like the album cover, and the booklet contains full lyrics to all the songs. If you only wish to buy one single album from The Lightning Seeds - 'Like You Do... Best Of' is the one to go for.

Having seen The Lightening Seeds at the 80s Rewind festival in the summer and reminded of how good a band they were, this CD is a great compilation of their best songs. Brilliant to play whilst driving! Very prompt delivery.
