Starred Review, School Library Journal, June 2012:
The imaginative child s enthusiasm is infectious kids might well be inspired to ask for secondhand outfits themselves . The overall effect is a visual celebration of old clothes. "

Very happy with this book as is one of the few which teach traditional values to children in a non-threating way. I am giving it to a friend's child as a birthday present as she will grow into it. It comes with a dust cover but I removed it as it was fraying. A good find. Thanks Amazon.

An excellent children's book. I bought it as I needed children's poems for my poetry group. This book was well written, entertaining and brilliantly illustrated. It was extremely well received at the poetry group readings!

HASH(0x98f2921c) out of 5 stars A wonderful book! 6 Dec. 2012
By NewDog - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I wish this book had been around when my mother was young! She grew up poor and her mother unwittingly taught her to be embarrassed that they could only afford used or donated clothes. However, the child in this book is thrilled to wear old clothes as she imagines what the lives and experiences of were of those wore the clothes before her. This book promotes a love of history as well as an underlying theme of ecology. We loved it!

HASH(0x98f2936c) out of 5 stars Encourage your little thrift shopper! 29 Sept. 2014
By Sonia Ansari - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
A book to encourage your little thrift shopper! This wonderful book begins, "I like old clothes, Hand-me-down clothes, Worn outgrown clothes, Not-my-own clothes." The author, Mary Ann Hoberman, was a former Children's Poet Laureate, and the pleasant rhythm of the words continue throughout the book. The little girl in this book doesn't turn up her nose at used clothing the way some people do. She loves "Clothes with a history, clothes with a mystery, Sweaters and shirts that are brother-and-sistery." She imagines the lives of the kids who wore the clothes before her and whose clothes they'll be when she finishes with them. The pictures by Patrice Barton are lovely and support the text perfectly. Great book!

HASH(0x98eb46fc) out of 5 stars Clothes with a history, Clothes with a mystery 22 Jan. 2013

"Clothes with a history,
Clothes with a mystery,
Sweaters and shirts
that are brother-and-sistery."

Just the right message, with soft illustrations which--appropriately--incorporate little recycled, collaged bits of fabric textures and patterns, and notions.

Pair this with I Had a Favorite Dress, by Boni Ashburn and Julia Denos.

HASH(0x98eb48b8) out of 5 stars I Like Old Clothes 6 April 2014

This is an excellent book to read when talking about recycling. The little girl in this book has such a positive and fun attitude towards old clothes, you can't help but get excited about going to a thrift shop. She wonders about where they came from, who wore them, and where they might go next. It's an attitude most people would never take towards clothing and it's fun to read.
HASH(0x98f29da4) out of 5 stars Teaches The Value of Re-Using! 25 Feb. 2015

I've always loved old clothes, especially when I was little. I loved getting them and I had no idea it wasn't 'cool' until I was in junior high!! I still love thrift shopping, even though I can afford to buy new clothes. I thought it was so neat when I found this book in the library. I checked it out my daughter loves it now too. I buy a lot of her clothing at the thrift store because kids grow so fast, I don't like to buy all new only for her to wear something a couple of times before she's outgrown it. I also have some clothes that were mine as a baby and child which my daughter has worn. So this book was a big hit for us.

The rhyming text and the beautiful illustrations thrilled my daughter and she keeps asking for this book. I'm buying it! I'm so glad I found this book. Hopefully when she's older she won't be self-conscious about her thrift store wardrobe!
