Great CD, Saturated Sound?
on 13 March 2012 - Published on Amazon.com
I need help on this: I just bought the CD and I like it, but there is a problem. Whenever Jesse pronouces an "s", it comes out as "sh". For example: "open halls of the soul" becomes "open hallshhh of the shhhoul". Is it just my copy that has some form of saturation or is it intended? I know she does not sound like that in "Reckless Burning". HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!

I am completely blown away by guitarist Phil Wandsher's playing. Incredible melodic playing that fuses perfectly with Jesse Sykes' singing and songwriting. I just wish I had a chance to see them as a band. I will continue to cross my fingers and hope they all get together for a tour (or another album) soon. Check out Marble Son as well....actually I have all the albums, they are all great.
Sweet, smoldering. But "Oh My Girl" is better.

Title of review says it all. This is a fine album, and if it does one thing better than "Oh My Girl", it paints a little bit more bittersweet image in my mind of lazing around an old plank-floored cabin or abandoned farmhouse next to a meadow as the first days of autumn chill begin to compete with the still-warm sunlight. Yeah. It does that for sure. But in terms of overall impact, overall story told, overall replay-the-whole-album-through-and-through value, I'm stuck on Oh My Girl for years and years. Call me cheap if you want.

A Pleasent Suprise
on 11 August 2008 - Published on Amazon.com
Wow, I wasn't expecting this. Sometimes surprises are better than expectations anyway. I first heard Jesse Sykes on the Sunn O))) and Boris "Altar" album and instantly loved her voice. I mostly listen to metal, hard rock and music most people would describe as "weird". Certainly NOT country or (gasp!) folk. This reminds me of a female Bob Dylan. The lyrics aren't necessarily complex, but they knock you upside your head when you least expect it. Sykes' voice is unique and stunning. She can be forceful and wounded, often in the same verse. The music ranges from country-ish rock to slow acoustic with great production and a warm guitar tone. If all country music was this intelligent and meaningful, I just might trade in my bullet belt for cowboy boots.
