Traumatised by the sudden death of her husband Gigi, Anna Taffano can't help obsessing over her marriage. Was their relationship really so perfect? Vulnerable and scared she slowly realises that she cannot let grief overwhelm her, that her life must go on.
Taking on a new teaching job seems a good start but staff-room politics threaten to destroy her delicate self-esteem. Interest from a new man is flattering but only exacerbates her longing for Gigi. In spite of the obstacles in her way, Anna forces herself to soldier on.
This is a well-crafted novel with a pacey plot. The characters are well-rounded and the descriptions of Edinburgh and Yorkshire are evocative. Anna herself is a sympathetic character. Poignant but not sentimental, this is ultimately a life-affirming story and a thoroughly good read. It would make an excellent Book Club choice.
