OK, equipment is as follows: iPad 4th Generation with 'Retina' Display. Cameras: Canon EOS 5D, EOS 1D Mark II, EOS 1Ds Mark II, Panasonic Lumix G3, Panasonic Lumix GX1 & Fuji X100.
This lead, together with ALL of the above cameras just works perfectly, and beautifully.
I felt I had to write this review, as this item has received very 'mixed' reviews, with some reviews claiming that it didn't work with their camera (one of which, interestingly, was an EOS 5D). To be clear: This lead/adapter DOES work; you just have to make sure your camera is set correctly. For example, if the EOS 5D is set to communicate 'To PC' via the USB connection, you get an error message on the iPad stating that it isn't compatible. However, change the camera to communicate to 'Printing/PTP' via the USB connection, and it works beautifully.
Another bonus is that I only shoot RAW on my EOS-1 series bodies, and the camera manual specifically states that ONLY JPEGs can be transmitted/transferred using USB. However, this clever bit of kit allows me to shoot RAW and the images are transferred to the iPad via USB. Clever stuff, without changing my shooting settings.
In a word: Don't believe the negative hype. Use this properly, and it works perfectly.

Having made the same (and needlessly wasteful) mistake as many others, I too had previously been "conned" into purchasing a third party objects supposedly capable of dong the same job as this adapter, which, in fairness, it did, albeit just the once before it fell apart in my hands, and really rather slowly when trying to complete the transfer

Having, and again, like many others before me, got past my inner objections against splashing out what is, quite obviously the old "captive market" we can charge as much as we like price tag from the openly greedy Apple, I conceded defeat and bought an adapter, as quite frankly, I could find no other effective way of getting the large number of images I wanted from camera to IPad, without faring about using my laptop, which was taking me an absolute age, as I often shoot in RAW.

I have to admit to having been just a tad dubious having read some of others comments as to whether or not this was going to work, but having read another Canon users comments, Mr Kelly, I felt quite reassured, so went ahead and ordered one.

On connecting it up to the camera to USB cable, my IPad (with retina display) picked up the images immediately, and the download speed was amazingly fast.

I have to say, now having got hold of a solution to my problem, that despite the silly cost, I truly am so very glad that I read all of the reviews through and went ahead with buying one.
An even nicer surprise was that from the 6-8 day delivery time quoted, having ordered it late on in the day one day, I was amazed to have it delivered the very next morning, complete with free delivery, and a few pence cheaper brand new than Amazon were selling it for, so full marks and some to the seller!!

One other thing that I would mention as worth thinking about-and I THINK I'm right in saying this-I was originally going to go for the Lightening to SD Card Adapter, as at present I am shooting on SD cards, however, on thinking a little more clearly about it, I realised that should Canon change their card system again (which they HAVE across the three differing in age SLR's of their that I own, and still occasionally use) then I would've been back in the same situation of not being able to access my images.
As the one consistent is that all three camera bodies have the body to USB ended cable, I can therefore still now get images off from any of my cameras, whilst had I gone for the SD adapter, clearly I couldn't (plus it was also £5 more!)

This adapter works well with my Canon and Fuji cameras, allowing quality viewing of photographs on my iPad Retina 4th generation. If you play Yamaha electronic drums, it is a good interface to allow iPad apps to work with the drum module. I am using a Yamaha DTX400 kit and interface it with the iPad Retina. The app "DTX400 touch" runs on the iPad and offers more speed and flexibility than the Yamaha drum module. Kits are selected and very easily modified via the iPad. The drum module accepts a USB 2 B male plug and a USB 2 A male plug goes to the apple MD821ZM/A adapter. The lightning plug of the adapter fits the 4G iPad. On connection, it is necessary to upgrade the firmware in the drum module. After first use, the app stopped working but I found an iPad reset and download of the latest os fixed the problem. This interface has made the Yamaha kit much easier to use. Be aware that Apple fit an authentication chip in their lightning plugs so some non Apple versions are not usable. Why only 4 stars? Its cost is ridiculous, but then Apple seem hell bent on having a bit more control of my freedom than I would like! If you want the genuine Apple product you'll have to pay and I have found to my cost, that many of the Chinese copies are not recognised by the iPad.

I bought this to use with an Audio-Technica USB AT2020 microphone, on the advice of the microphone manufacturers tech dept. They claimed that the standard AT2020 model which takes (but does not come with) an XLR (3 pin) cable would not work, even with an iRig, which has the XLR input. Or, if it did allow some kind of recording, that the results would not be great. Always keen to follow the word of one who knows, I ordered up this Apple USB to Lightning connector, which was actually a fiver cheaper from Amazon than from the (unrelenting greed of) Apple.

Good news, it works splendidly. There's nothing to set up, and the mic is powered direct from the iPad. There had been some suggestion that a separate powered USB hub might be needed, but this is NOT the case, at least working with an iPad Air 2 model. Earlier models may be different. Monitoring is via the iPad's headphone socket.

BTW, I don't know what the problem is with Amazon and sending cables, but the microphone was delivered four days ahead of the cable, with the cable arriving one working day after Amazon's delivery date. Yet both items were bought on the same day. Quite why they couldn't put it in the same box is a mystery, as it was originally listed as such. Not the first time this has happened with smaller items.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes for Midi connection!
Reviewed in Canada on 24 January 2015
This came in what seems to me to be the official apple packaging.

If you are wondering if you can connect your midi device to your iPhone 5, the answer is yes!
I've successfully connected my Arturia Minilab Midi Keyboard to my iPhone 5. Also my Korg nanoPad2. They work with GarageBand perfectly, as well as Music Studio and DM1. I've yet to try them with other apps but I'm sure they would work great. No set up.. Just connect and play! No delay in feedback either, it's perfect.
The only gripe is that your midi device will be taking power from your iPhone, so make sure it has some charge.

I'm very happy with this purchase. I recommend this to anyone wanting to connect a midi device to their iphone, and judging from other reviews, also iPads!
