Product description

Review

'Vivid, gripping and authentic storytelling, The Lighterman may be Simon Michael's best thriller yet.' --Robert Daws, bestselling author of the Sullivan and Broderick murder investigations

'Heart stopping crime drama from the author who lays down the laws of thriller writing.' --Mark Mayes, bestselling author of The Gift Maker

About the Author

During Simon's years of practice at the Bar he has prosecuted and defended enough murderers, armed robbers, con artists and other assorted villainy to provide him with a lifetime of true crime stories. Simon had several books published in the UK and the USA in the 1990s and his short story Split was shortlisted for the Cosmopolitan-Perrier Short Story Award. Four children, two divorces and lots of therapy forced him spend the next 20 years in full-time practice as a lawyer, but in 2016 he was finally able to retire from the Bar to devote himself to full-time writing. The Brief (September 2015) and An Honest Man (July 2016) are the first two books in the Charles Holborne series, set in the dangerous gangland streets of 1960s London.

I had some important things to do yesterday but, once I started this, first thing in the morning, I could not stop and did nothing else but read it, throughout the day, the evening, and into the early hours, until I had finished it.
A legal procedural, with an action thriller wrapped around it - a great plot, great writing, set against a great picture of the way things were in the 1960s, and absolutely riveting.
This is the third book in the Charles Holborne series and each one just gets better; as I said in my review of the second book, "An Honest Man", it's good to read a book from an author who obviously has an intimate knowledge of his subject matter, legal and court processes in this case, but who avoids the temptation to drown his story in arcane detail.
The central theme is about a court case and we are led through the legal processes but, at the same time, Holborne has to deal with a little bit of a problem he has with one of the Kray twins and, in learning about Holborne's back story, we find that he has not always been the paragon of virtue and upholder of the law and the honour of the legal profession as previously portrayed; we also find that, when the chips are down and it is important to him, he will do whatever it takes to get the right result, regardless of how far he has to bend or even break the law.
We also get a fascinating picture of the difficult and dangerous life of the Thames lightermen, something I had never thought of before, and we learn about the Waterguard, something I had never heard of.
TOP QUALITY READ in big capital letters!
So, when do we get the next instalment?

I truly enjoyed this book, it downloaded this morning and I finished reading it at tea time, this is sure sign of a page turner, This is the 3rd in the series and I have enjoyed each one, it took me a little time to warm to the brief but by the time I was half way through i was hooked, I couldn't wait for the honest man and now the lighterman. I love how the author portrays Charles, I just love the character, he is an enigma if not a complete oxymoron. You really never know where the story will take you and just when you expect something from Charles he does the opposite. It is clear the author knows the legal system but never allows what could be overly complicated become boring, all in all a good read highly recommended

Dark and dangerous times for Charlie, another gripping read. Fast paced and action packed tale of the seedy side of Gangland London.

Here we have another good legal drama involving characters from a different era - 60s London with the Kray brothers, who make cameos and whose activities are pretty central to the story.

The story was a bit slow to start and I was unsure of the need to flash-back (the latest fad in crime fiction?), but the latter feature did explain an important relationship. There are good courtroom scenes, although I would hesitate to call this a courtroom drama given the crimes, relationships and activities which occupy the pages.

Michael writes well, delivers intriguing scenarios and sets things up nicely so that the reader aligns with the protagonist.

Given what occurs in this book, you won't want to miss the sequel, which I hope is on its way. (To be clear, there are no loose ends in the legal case which was the core of this novel, so readers are not left hanging). Overall, good stuff, once again.
