This series has a love triangle with a new slant at its heart, and having fluctuated between Cal and Zane, with the gut feeling that Ari belongs with Cal, I now find myself leaning in the direction of Zane. It is very difficult not to like him, he is such a good hearted, genuine sort of guy. Unlike the other two books, he has this story all to himself and Siobahn Davis does a great job of getting under his skin and exploring the male psyche. We come to know and understand a lot more about Zane and his relationship with Ari than we did in the previous books. His character is really fleshed out and it feels as if the reader is in his skin, feeling everything he feels, and experiencing all his fears and emotions. I love the selfless way he cares for Ari, and one gets the feeling he would sacrifice anything for her happiness.
The novella starts as a fairly lighthearted romance between two young people, but gradually we come to realise that something in the past has deeply affected Ari and before long Zane is given information that will rock their worlds and force unbelievable upheaval and change beyond anything either of them could have imagined.
Several things I wondered about in the first two books are explained in this story – but Siobahn Davis is the master at keeping her readers in suspense and as fast as one question is answered, another is raised. We never do find out what the incident was in the past, that so affected Ari - presumably this will be revealed in the next book - and again the story ends on something of a cliffhanger, although if you’ve read the first two books you will know what is going to happen when Ari and her family reach the new world, Nova, but poor Zane is left alone, bereft and heartbroken. It’s a tear-jerker for sure, and, as with the other two books, I just wanted to carry on reading. Another five star story from Ms Davis, and I can’t wait to read Destiny Rising!
I received an ARC copy from Siobhan Davis in return for my honest review.
Normally this cover would not be my thing at all however this is exactly what Zane and Ari look like! It sums up their relationship in one perfect picture and the stars over the cover add the mystery. I love all of the other covers and this one fits in beautifully with the others in the series.
The novella has a different feel to it than Love Struck all of the feelings are there but the difference between the two boys is apparent. Cal was trying to play it cool with Ari whereas Zane lets her know how he is feeling always. Reading this Ari acts like a completely different girl. Which of course she would, even though she has something looming over her that she is trying to work out she still has a more carefree attitude that we have not seen before and I hope we get to see a little more of this Ari.
Now is the perfect time to bring in these novellas, I felt like I knew them but I didn't. I had no clue of how Ari and Zane were before she was taken away.
The whole story was bitter sweet, The love between the couple feels real and raw. Its easy to get caught up in their relationship until you are brought back down to the real world remembering what comes next for the pair. I enjoyed getting to read about the interaction between the families, we got to see her dad before Novo and that was interesting.
I am really struggling to pick a team for this crazy love triangle. Until Love Struck I was team Zane but after these two novellas I just don't know. Zane is just so real with his feelings and his actions but Cal sort of has that bad boy gone good feel about him for me. I suppose I will have to wait until the release of Destiny Rising and see if I can make my decision with the next instalment.
At the end of Beyond Reach Ari remembers something and we have not yet discovered what it is but Light of a thousand stars references what it might be keeping that cliff hanger going. I feel like Siobhan has manage to fit so much into this small portion of book that you come away feeling like you have read a full 300+ page novel.
I am so excited for Destiny Rising and I can't wait get get my teeth into the rest of the story.
If you have not started this series yet then why not?? Just do it! I promise you will love it. I do.
A message to all lovers of a great YA story: you must read Light of a Thousand Stars! A short novella following Zane and Ariana’s love story before she left for Novo, it’s a small extra to the brilliant world of the True Calling books. The author’s writing flows as well as ever, making Light of a Thousand Stars unbeatably un-put-down-able.
The characters invoke huge empathy within the reader, and their actions and behaviour in this novella helps to further justify their later actions and behaviour (i.e. in True Calling, Beyond Reach and presumably the third book in the trilogy). I found that the intense emotions between Ariana and Zane changed my thoughts on their relationship and the current love triangle, producing complications for book 3.
The plot has you on the edge of your seat, with a rather large secret that is concealed from the reader. Fast-paced tension and action with romance is a great combination of genres in any book or film, and the author delivered this on every level.
The superb description and imagery created an extraordinarily real universe that I would love to live in. The True Calling trilogy is the next top YA dystopian series, and to get the most out this world, read Light of a Thousand Stars to enlighten yourself about the wonders of both behind why the move to Novo occurred and the story of Ariana and Zane.
