I think I had high expectations of this book when I bought it, that I would be in on some mystery, get some great tips but there wasn't much that I didn't already know except some niche fashion stuff. I felt the writer was being warm, genuine and realistic (for someone with big disposable income). Something I hate is bragging and showing off but I was relieved there wasn't too much of that or too much annoying irony. It did get a bit "you should" do this or that at times which irked a bit. If you regularly read women's magazines or Sunday supplements don't bother as you will be more up to date and style savvy than this book which is now on the brink of being dated. I don't know why I was attracted to it or why anyone would really need to read it. If you're already of a mind to think along these lines, for self improvement you'll know this stuff already too. It's all in the general arena, it's instinctive and the rest is just fad and fashion. I am a 40 year old NHS employee, single mum and live in a council flat and the book didn't annoy me as much as some readers I see, except maybe the travel section as I can't afford to go anywhere, ever!

While perusing the list of books about life and stuff, I bought this to see if I could get a few tips, because it had been well-reviewed and seemed very good value! Unfortunately, despite trying quite hard to find some good tips, I didn't really find much of help to me. It may be very helpful to some women, especially young ladies in their early 20's starting out in their independence, but it didn't seem to be aimed at me - a late-30 something professional who is not looking for love or their first property or is at the start of their career. However, I will try passing it onto a friend to see if they benefit from it. :)

By Laura on 26 Dec. 2011
Format: Hardcover
This has the 'honour' of being the only book I've actually ripped up and thrown in the bin. I found the authors tone so condescending it irritated me beyond belief. I imagine this to be written by some weight obsessed fashionista who skips around Notting Hill all day in repetto ballet flats with coloured ribbon tied around her waist. What posesses people like this to preach to others about managing their lives, despite the odd wink and alluding that she's 'one of the girls' how far removed from normality is this person? I didn't read this book in page order but when I stumbled across a recommendation for a 'quick fix' weight loss treatment (after all life's too short!) costing around £1000 I just thought what planet does this woman live on, I mean really???!!!!
The market has long been saturated with these books and this is just trying to cash in. I found the whole tone so annoying I couldn't even inflict it on other people by putting it in the charity bag so enjoyed ripping it up. It's rubbish.

I have just finished reading this wonderful book so decided to submit my thoughts. I was REALLY shocked to read that horrible review from Laura. She sounds like she's a girl with an axe to grind. If you don't like it, don't read it!!!

I see that Grace has written other books about being a Mum but since I am not a Mum, I'm not going there. But my best mate who is a Mum bought me this for Christmas as she thought I'd like Grace's style.

It's light hearted, very amusing and actually full of some really genius tips.

Laura sounds like she shouldn't be reading Grace's books in the first place. Try a bit of Proust or Brecht, Laura - I think that's more your kind of book.

What I wanted to say is it's January, I've got the blues and this book cheered me up no end. I've already passed it on to my sister in law who is then passing it on to her sister.

I can't recommend it enough. It's made my cold, miserable January really sunny and happy.

Life's Too Short manages to be both witty and incredibly useful whilst also avoiding patronisation or self importance. From the very beginning Grace Saunders acknowledges that we don't want prescriptive tips on exactly how to live our lives, we need ways to make them easier! This book is the perfect guide for modern women of any age who want to cheat their way through those boring chores (cooking, cleaning, dieting, the list goes on...) and make room for more fun and excitement. As a woman just entering my adult life I know it will serve me well!

As a twenty-three year old, I absolutely loved this book. Even though not all of the chapters were relevant to my life (not that I expected them to be) it was insightful and funny and I learnt a great deal from it. Will be passing the book on to my mum - even a wise woman like herself could learn a thing or two from this delightful guide.

Bought this recently as a relaxed read and honestly, it's got me guffawing out loud (read the section about the discovery of the 'shoe habit'). You get the impression the author is one of those top girlie mates you can't live without rather than some smug self-help guru who's lost all track of reality. The book doesn't take itself too seriously and there are some genius tips in here for living proper, real life. Top book, loving it.

This is a perfectly formed reference book filled with tips and hints on how to make our fast paced, high pressured lives a little more managable. And most importantly give us more time to spend on the fun things. In fact its a pocket sized best mate -a gem of a book. Thanks Grace Saunders.
