5.0 out of 5 stars LIfe in Haiku 30 July 2012
By A. E. Drury - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
A series of studies in Haiku by the author of the fantastic Kiwi series of YA fantasy books. I've read some of Ms. Johnstone's poetry before and this collection is something of a departure from those which I have read. It is a bit more mature and yet it possesses the same grounded kindness which has made her a much beloved writer of young adult fiction. There are bits of sad reality mixed in with joyful beauty to form little threads of reflections on life. Some of them I found profoundly and beautifully sad. My favorite of those was, "She laughs so seldom, Cries when no one is looking, Keeps herself hidden." This is both a heartbreaking image that provokes parental feelings in the reader and at the same time demonstrates an empowering honesty that I found quite touching.

As in life, there are humorous moments. My most favorite one being, "If I second guess, The card that you're about to play, You'll owe me this time!" -- wishful, hopeful and probably futile. Who hasn't sat in just such a game?

My favorite of the entire collection is one which I wish I had written and certainly felt on many an occasion. "He holds the wide stage, Empty and bereft of sound, hypnotizing him." Anyone who has walked out upon a stage as been in this moment.

I spent the morning with these poems, reading, clipping and reflecting. I find them wonderful little treasure and am happy to have them in my library, there for when I need to summon an image for comfort or inspiration.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great Selection 27 Dec. 2012
By B. Ditmars - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Life's Rhythms is a great selection of traditional haiku. There is beauty as well as current themes reflecting nature and man's misuse of it. The cover art as well I found appropriate and symbolic of the contents. That said, there were a few issues, not so much with the writing as personal taste. I found the 5-7-5 form a bit constrictive. I think the author should have switched it up with 3-5-3 or other variants. Or thrown in an extra syllable for the hell of it. I love traditional haiku but I find it wears on me if I read it in a large volume such as this. The nature themes as well were nice but I would have liked to see Johnstone write with a more personal touch at times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book of poetry. 12 Jan. 2013

Vickie Johnstone has again put out a good book of poetry, with her own unique combination of traditional haiku with a modern edge. There are some evocative words and great imagery here, and many of the poems can easily be linked together to form lyrical stories. Definitely worth a read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Life's Rhythms ~ Book of Poems ~ Inspiring! 7 Dec. 2012
By Patricia aka Mamaw - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Life's Rhythms is full of beautiful poems. If you want to be inspired then you should definitely read Vickie's poems. I did not want to rush through either of the books. How can I describe how I felt when reading the poems? I wanted to enter the poem and feel the emotions. Kind of like sitting in my rocker looking out into the piney woods that surround my house. I feel the trees swaying, birds and squirrels playing. Reading her poems were like that, inspiring, heart felt and full of wonder. An emotional experience.

When I posted the review on my blog I had also reviewed Kaleidoscope in the same post/review.

I highly recommend this book.

I received a free copy of these books from the author for review. I was in no way compensated for this review. It is my own opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Flows 13 Aug. 2012
By Ey Wade - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I grew up disliking poetry of any kind. Couldn't ever get into the short rhyming lines that seemed to be just thrown together but with Vickie I took a chance. I have already read two of her novels and loved her style of writing so when the chance to review Life's. Rhythms appeared I jumped to it. I was not disappointed. Life flows through Vickie's words. Each haiku is a novel, a story within itself. Vickie's words are picturesque. I could 'feel' the rain as it fell on the leaves and remember how green smells when the rain touches the earth. Thanks to her easy way of writing, I think I may try more poetry. I recommend everyone take a chance and read, Life's Rhythms
