I picked this book up on a whim and nearly didn't with the Apocalyptic heading in the title. The opening pages with the End of the world as we mere mortals know it also didn't help much as it felt like a big artificial Universe slap, so as to allow the story to develop. Ironic as that is exactly what it was. However I quickly found the characters engaging and the book did well convey the agony of waking up and finding the world has changed.
Some clever uses of game dynamics as well as a few salutatory lessons in brains over brawn. Lead character has issues (don't they all) but these were well written about and dynamically played, even to the end.
Liked the shocked people issues and the fact that this was not all "jolly hockey-sticks" but a tragedy and trauma which people had to get through.
Very interested to see how the second book in the series goes and would recommend reading this and not being put off if you think this is a simple survivalist apocalyptic story as it is more LirRPG than you think. I may have to read his other book now too!
Good read, and only four starts as i thought the opening was a it of a sledgehammer, but I am probably being harsh......
