Product description

Synopsis

The descendant of Jewish immigrants who became a peer, Greville Janner has worked throughout his life to foster greater understanding between communities in Britain and across the world. Born in Wales into a political and Zionist family, Lord Janner became the youngest ever War Crimes Investigator at the age of eighteen, in 1947. It was the start of a new life, one dedicated to trying to overcome all that Belsen stood for. In 1970, he was elected to succeed his father - MP for Leicester North West - and his political career spanned 27 years. "To Life!" is the record of a life of service to humanity and a remarkable chapter in the history of the post-war world. With a foreword by Tony Blair, it will appeal to anyone interested in the aftermath of the Holocaust, war crimes, reparation for losses in the Second World War, the creation of the State of Israel and in the British parliamentary scene from 1970 to the late 1990s, with some remarkable insights not only into Janner's Labour colleagues but into prominent Conservatives such as Margaret Thatcher, Enoch Powell and Alan Clarke.

Greville Janner (Lord Janner of Braunstone QC) is a prominent Labour politician, Chairman of the Holocaust Education Trust and Vice-President of World Jewish Congress. He is the author of many books on legal and business issues and of One Hand Alone Cannot Clap: An Arab-Israeli Universe.
