5 Stars *****
Well what can I say? WOW!!
Lies and Lullabies is a dark standalone full of suspense.
It follows the story of Simone, an illegitimate daughter of one of LA’s most hated and powerful men who likes to control everything and everyone one including his daughter.
During the week Simone is a good girl who wants to please her dad and has explemary behaviour and during the weekend she is Sugar, out on the streets looking for something that she may never find.
Catch wants Simone and will do anything to make her his own. He draws Simone into his world, which is dark and full of danger.
I like the way that the character’s become their own and gel into one another as this makes the story more believable.
Simone is a strong and feisty woman who is easily manipulated by everyone around her buy Catch makes her realise that she can be independent.
I like the way that Catch is always one step ahead of the other players and other people around him-he is one clever guy as well as a hot, alpha male. He is also shroud in mystery which I liked.
Lies and Lullabies is an absolutely brilliant read and is the first book that I have read written by Courtney Lane and it won’t be the last. Plenty of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. I found myself holding my breath at times!
If I could give more stars then I would willingly!
For a long time in the book, Simone was asking Catch ‘am I your friend or your enemy?’ and his response is ‘I can only guarantee when you’re with me, I’ll never do anything to your body, physically, that you won’t be able to walk away from’. Which is obviously confusing and annoying because it is a non-answer.
Catch is such a clever person, always one step ahead of the other players. He actually scared me in some parts, but I still love him. Some of the things he said in the book made me so inquisitive. So I kept reading until I knew the answer.
‘A good player never reveals his strategy by disclosing what he knows about his opponent’
Catch was changing Simone throughout the story. He was showing her the type of person that she actually is, not the one that she thinks she is. It helped because she was no longer being controlled by her powerful, controlling father.
‘I’m going to change your life. Don’t ruin out beautiful start by behaving rashly’
There were massive shockers in the book! I even cried in some parts. I know I have already said this but I loved this book. Any words I say will not do this book justice Courtney has written this so well and I would happily read more of her work. Secretly hoping there will be a second book of Catch and Simone.
Lie & Lullabies is a dark, suspense standalone novel by Courtney Lane. This was my first book by this author and I very much doubt that it will be my last. It’s a dark, twisted story of a woman living two lives to try and escape her domineering Father and the prison like life he imposes on her. She’s the illegitimate daughter of one of Los Angeles most powerful and hated men. On the weekend she’s Sugar, who wonders the dangerous streets of L.A looking for something she just cannot find but during the week she’s good girl Simone who does whatever her Father wants.
Catch is a man shrouded in mystery and he wants Simone. After he draws her into his dark and tangled web a dangerous game begins. A game where lives are lost, truths are exposed and where the foundation of a powerful organisation are on the brink of collapse.
I was completely captivated by this story – it was crammed full of twists and turns and whilst it took a bit for me to figure out the characters once I did I realised how brilliant they were. I like stories that aren’t predictable and this one definitely is one of those! The characters were well developed and fascinating – especially Catch, I’m pretty sure I shouldn’t like him as much as I did. I thought that the background stories of the characters came through really well. Simone and Catch stripped each other back layer by layer as the story progressed so by the end you totally understood their character and their actions.
Simone is a strong, feisty woman who has suffered quite a lot at the hands of her Father, I thought she came across really well and even though Catch manipulated her she never lost that fighting spirit that served her early on in the story.
Catch definitely had a few different sides to his character - he is controlling, dominating, manipulative but also there’s an irresistible and sweet side to him and also incredibly sexy! He’s certainly a mysterious one! He keeps you guessing because you cannot predict what he might do next.
The relationship between the two is pretty turbulent and is definitely not a romantic love story! There is a huge amount of sexual chemistry bubbling away between them and there are a few erotic scenes that take place between the two.
Overall I thought the story was really well written, gruesome in places, a bit erotic at times but always attention keeping and never a dull moment!
I give Lies & Lullabies by Courtney Lane 4.5 stars!
