Redefining Wireless Speakers
Set Your Music Free
ZIPP is redefining what a wireless home speaker should be in 3 ways. (1) You can stream to it however you want via Wi-Fi (longest range and highest music quality), Bluetooth (stream from any device, anywhere), AirPlay (iOS), DLNA (Android), and Spotify Connect (play your Spotify music directly from ZIPP without needing your device). (2) Unlike other Wi-Fi speakers that only play music services that are supported by their proprietary app, ZIPP streams all audio and video apps natively-if you can stream it ZIPP can play it. (3) ZIPP's multi-speaker flexibility is unmatched due to its rechargeable battery, convenient carrying strap, and 360° sound. Unlike wireless bookshelf speakers designed to be placed in fixed rooms, ZIPP is designed to be moved wherever you want to enjoy your music and can easily be paired with other ZIPPs at any time. ZIPP is truly wireless (no AC lead) so paired or by itself you can move them with you when your party shifts from one room to another without losing a beat.
No need to carry your phone around to manage your music. Use the intuitive touch interface to easily interact with ZIPP MINI. From the touchpad you can directly adjust volume, play/pause, track skip, and access 5 Internet radio presets.
360 degree sound
The Zipp Mini delivers 360 degree FullRoom sound - but also has optional true stereo sound when you pair two Zipp's together and assign sound left and the right - easy to do in the app.
Connect speakers together simply by touching the soundspace logo. Click the heart symbol to enjoy internet radio stations. Adjust the volume by moving your finger clockwise/anticlockwise or track skip using the arrows.
Soundspace Multiroom connectio
Create your own Multiroom network in your home and play music anywhere. Soundspace link supports six speakers per group in a wireless network. A maximum of 16 speakers can connect to a network.
Frequently asked questions
Stream all your favourite audio and video apps natively including Amazon Music, Apple Music, Pandora, Netflix, YouTube, Tidal and future apps. You can even stream Spotify Connect and Internet Radio directly from ZIPP, without needing your phone.
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth & Airplay
Use Wi-Fi for longest range and highest music quality, or Bluetooth to stream from any device.
Portability with built in batteries

The support for this speaker by Libratone can't be faulted, as over the time I have owned it quite a few firmware updates have been made available, each enhancing the unit. The biggest was in March 2017 which reduced the startup time from over 30 seconds to under 10 seconds. it also added a standby sleep function to reduce power consumption. The already long list of supported functions will be increased towards the end of 2017 or the beginning of 2018 with the addition of Amazon Alexa and Apple AirPlay 2. This will really place the Zipp at the top of the pile when it comes to wireless speakers.
I know SONOS will be adding Alexa support to existing speakers but only via the Alexa App or an Echo Dot. If they update the existing lineup to include AirPlay 2 then it would be a tight race, providing you did not want battery portability!
For Android and Windows fans the SONOS may offer a better route, as long as you accept the limitations but for Apple and Mac users the Libratone Zipp is hard to beat due to the simplicity of AirPlay and the fact you can stream anything.
One plus point of the Zipp over SONOS is the fact you can preset up to 5 Internet radio stations or Spotify playlists that can be selected from the speaker without any need to use an App. This can be a great feature for a kitchen speaker when you don't have a phone or tablet to hand.
Overall i love the Zipp and the bold loud sound it can produce but even when listening at low levels it packs a punch often missing from other small speakers.
All I can say is if I hadn't I don't think I would be sitting in the garden listening to a perfectly good Airplay rendition of a HiRes album served up by Roon. In other words - a fancy music server converting a 24bit 96Khz album and serving it to the Zipp via Airplay after having processed it down to 16bit and 44.1Khz. That still annoys me - I wish Libratone would deal with higher rates, but even over DLNA (via Qobuz) I found that it all gets down sampled to 16bit 44.1Khz.
To be expected. Don't know if Airplay 2 will bring any change to this. But even with this I find that Room plays VERY nicely with the Libratone. Enough to say that I have found that the best tonal quality is WITHOUT an of the DSP effects within Libratone ie opting for the flat response. This is always a sign that the audio equipment is good quality.
Forget bluetooth - it's a pain in the rear and best left for hands free calling in the car. WiFi works really well (I did change the SSID of the router to a name with no special characters - apparently that can be a problem) and I have not had a single drop out. Using the radio station facility within Roon has also allowed me to have BBC Radio 3 using its 'HD' stream.
The internal radio station facility of Libratone works well enough, but I don't think the provider offers the HD Radio 3 stream - everything else is fine.
Definitely portable - the handle comes in use - and reasonably attractive (well...unobtrusive as you would want).
Sound quality is better than a Sonos 1 but obviously not as accomplished as a Sonos 5. But they have to be tied to a power socket, so the Zipp is hitting above its weight. The price (just below £200) is definitely worth it. The Zipp is so versatile - a full range of inputs and a VERY EASY control interface (the touch controls on the top of the cylander are easy to use).
A genuine gem - so glad I took all those years before deciding on the Libratone Zipp. Whilst you would probably need a couple of them to have enough volume for a party in the garden, one is sufficient for an outdoors concert :-)
These (I bought two – of which more later) are very nearly very good. They are let down by the (android) app – the app which is ESSENTIAL for managing the input and output.
As far as sound quality and volume is concerned –provided your input signal is strong enough – I am very impressed. As an ageing hippy I like my music loud, and I need emphasised treble tones. Out of the box, these are good (as I say, provided your input source is at a high enough level), verging on very good. However, if you are using standard applications on your phone for e.g. Internet radio - and if they don’t have any way of boosting the output, the maximum volume will be only moderate.
Using foobar to play my media collection from my PC, and using the equaliser to increase output across the spectrum I was able to get a volume nearly as loud (and certainly as good quality) as my old hifi. No, the floor didn’t vibrate as it does with my old Bose Acoustimass sub-woofer, but for a ’pair’ of small wifi speakers I was very impressed.
BUT – the app. Oh dear. It is here that you can group (and stereo-pair) the speakers to good effect. Well almost. They do pair (and would support more) BUT it’s almost impossible to get a proper stereo left-right setup to ‘stick’. The app sometimes allows you to set each speaker as left/right or stereo, but not always. It sometimes allows you to set the ‘balance’ by adjusting the volume of each speaker independently, but not always. Often it drops back to the default of both speakers each being stereo, then it might allow you to switch one to being – say – left, but maddeningly refuses to allow you to switch the other to right. Then it refuses to allow you to switch the ‘left’ speaker back to stereo. Then the volumes of each speaker sometimes default t being the same, so your carefully tweaked left-right balance is gone. Of course, you’ve no idea if the app is actually reporting the correct status of each speaker by now or whether it and they have gone their separate ways.
Well, I’ll stick with it for a few days more and decide whether to send them back after Christmas.
It’s a shame, they are so very nearly very good indeed.
