Product Description

Review

'As the follow up to The Liberty Book of Home Sewing, this book is great for beginners who want to learn to sew and create their own home furnishings and accessories. It has everything you need to know, from the essential tools and equipment required, to how to hem, bind, seam and create joins. Each step of the way there are handy diagrams with easy-to-follow instructions and beautiful Liberty print fabric suggestions.' --Good Homes, 1st October 2013

'It wasn't going to be hard to convince us on a book filled with sewing projects made from Liberty fabric because, well, Liberty fabric is beautiful anyway, but Lucinda Ganderton and Christine Leech's projects in The Liberty Book of Simple Sewing do it justice and more. With 25 makes in Liberty's signature floral patterns, there's the worry that the whole thing could come across a bit twee, but contemporary styling with an industrial edge sells it as relevant to the modern home.' --Crafty Magazine, issue 6, September 2013

Liberty Art Fabrics is a long-established brand that continues to go from strength to strength. Since the publication of The Liberty Book of Home Sewing, the first ever practical craft book from Liberty, the range of fabrics produced by the in-house design studio has expanded to include the popular lifestyle craft cotton, hardwearing linen union and elegant madras cotton. All the projects in this book have been realised with instructions by Lucinda Ganderton who is a multi-skilled sewer and Christine Leech who has been an avid sewer since childhood.

As you would expect this book is stunning, filled with beautiful Liberty prints both in the projects and on the pages. Luckily the projects themselves are pretty too. Aimed at beginners there are 25 easy to sew projects with step by step instructions and illustrations to follow.
The projects include a sewing tidy (which shot straight to the top of my `to make' list), sewing machine cover, cloud cushions, hanging birds, chevron quilt, chair pads, kids pyjamas, a storage bolster, foot stool, curtain panel and more. Many ways to introduce a stylish touch of Liberty to your home.

I particularly like how they give you the history of the main fabric featured in each project, I was amazed to read one, Pinky, had been designed by 5 year olds! There's also a guide to the fabrics used in the back of the book too. There are templates for the projects in the rear of the book but they do require enlarging, most by 200%.

Another beautiful Liberty book to covet!

I was bought this book as a gift and at first look it's a stunning book. The projects are lovely and the photography very attractive.. I wanted to make everything. The first thing I started to make was the chevron quilt and I quickly ran into issues. I am not an advanced sewer but just simple maths will tell you that the number of patchwork squares needed to make up the quilt is incorrect.

The instructions state that you need 38 blocks of Print 5 and 28 of Prints 1, 2, 3 & 4. I made all my blocks and while laying out the fabric blocks to make the quilt I could see that there were not enough blocks. I thought I must have been going mad and lost some of the blocks so I counted them all up again and again and double checked the instructions but I had the right number as stated by the book but it was not enough.

I had remembered also seeing the instructions on the Liberty Blog.. the blog states "You will need to make 38 blocks with each of prints 1, 2, 3 and 4, and 29 blocks with print 5. Cut nine 6 x 3 1/4 inch rectangles from print 5 for the top edge and nine from white fabric for the bottom edge." http://www.liberty.co.uk/blog/17580/make-your-own-chevron-quilt/

These instructions completely differ to what is printed in the book. I had to purchase more fabric to make the correct number of blocks. Clearly at some point someone noticed that the instructions in the book were wrong and corrected them on the liberty blog post.. Maybe they updated this in newer editions? I'm not sure and I haven't had the interest since to try any of the other projects in the book.

I emailed Liberty with this complaint as I was so annoyed I had to purchase more expensive liberty fabric to finish my quilt and it wasted my time but of course I heard absolutely nothing!

The book has lovely other projects with hopefully correct instructions - but I'm not sure if I will risk trying them just yet. (I STILL haven't finished the quilt!)

I have had a copy of this book for some time and bought another copy for my daughter who has now started to be a very enthusiastic and very productive sewer. The instructions in the book are frankly not very good and you have to be a decent sewer to decipher some of them.

A beautiful book, so lovely to leaf through, there is so much detail on each page. I love the little step by step coloured diagrams which even explain which liberty fabric was used to complete which design. Some lovely easy to follow projects here, something for everyone.

Lovely book, I'm very pleased. One complaint is the awful price sticker on the back. I had to scratch it off and it left the book slightly sticky. I would expect an easy-peel sticker from Liberty or none at all!

Attractive book, excellent guides for new sewers, reminders for old hands. All in all an inspirational book. I bought it for my daughter-in-law as I'd enjoyed it so much. Intoxicating cos it's well seasoned with Liberty prints. Mmmm!

I have always had a fascination about Liberty's and had bought items with their fabric on it, so was interested to know some of the details of the iconic fabrics. The simple reminders were useful as I haven't sewn for a while. The projects went from cloud cushions, chair pads, table mats, which were useful to pyjama trousers which weren't so useful. I particularly liked the inclusion of a pet bed, which I didn't expect to see, but was grateful for, as one of my dogs regularly destroys his bed when we deign to go outside without him. An interesting and useful read. Only gave it a four star rating as not all the projects were interesting.
