Dedicated and visionary, Roger Sargent was the perfect mirror, truthful without doubt, perceptive without ego... bedside manner of a minotaur! (Carl Barât)
Anthony Thornton is a better writer than Lester Bangs (Peter Doherty)
Emotion, insight and sheer beatific quality ... [Sargent's photos] stand as a fine testament ... Thornton's [text] is equally enrapturing (MOJO)
An intelligent and pacy exploration of a musical phenomenon (INDEPENDENT)
The definitive story of The Libertines, from the writer and photographer who know them best.See all Product description

Written by NME magazine scribe and former editor Anthony Thornton, and illustrated with 100 of the most brilliant portraits (many of which appeared here for the first time) by noted photographer Roger Sargent, this fine biography details the fall and rise of these troubled young men. It was published in 2009, and although The Libs have since reformed and delivered up a great new album, it was to be another six years before 'Anthems of Doomed Youth' was to materialise.
Thornton clearly knew what he was talking about, and put together a generally unbiased look-back at this tale of friendship, great music making, and the events leading up to the band's fall-out and subsequent demise. Where this unauthorised biography succeeds, where so many fail, is that it actually provides a lot of insight and understanding into it's subject through lots of first-hand accounts. As well as being good, concise overview, documenting the band from the start to their projects after The Libertines, the icing on the cake really are the photographs, which would have been reason enough for me to give this book five stars.
Love Pete Doherty and Carl Barat? Two very gifted men who practically started the whole revival of the British rock scene? - then buy this book, 'The Libertines Bound Together' makes for a real companion.
It's the kind of wild rock 'n' roll morality tale that's been missing from British music since the anodyne invasion of boy bands and pop idol. Lavishly illustrated with Sargeant's gorgeous pictures, it reveals those Libertines boys in all their squalid beauty.
It's not a cut and paste celebrity biography - this one will stand the test of time. It's a modern classic and an esential item on any music fan's bookshelf. Put it next to 'Revolution in the Head'
The Libertines are the most inspiring band I have ever come across, and reading this book has only caused me to fall deeper in love with them.
Their songs are incredible and innovative, their relationships are heart-rending yet undoubtably loyal , and this book serves them well.
Written by music journalist Anthony Thornton and photographed by the unquestionably gifted Roger Sargent, the book details the turbulent relationship between Pete and Carl from the first time they met, and delves into the devastation that drugs brought to their unbreakable bond also exploring the highs that this incredible band reached.
Written by a man who himself witnessed many of the significant events that took place over the years, this book is probably the best representation of The Libertines we will ever get.
The photography is stunning and the saying, 'a picture paints a thousand words' has never been more true.
All in all, I give this book full marks, a must for any libertine or someone who simply wishes to be inspired.
