Format: Audio CD
This compilation from the Lex label offers eighteen, what they would undoubtedly call "cuts" of prime hip hop beats , ultra cool raps and relentless rhythmic conundrums. It's beautifully packaged in a stylish arty cardboard sleeve with an inner gatefold sleeve. Regrettably much of what is on offer in terms of the music is tiresome ,derivative and occasionally unlistenable .Compared to a genuinely exciting and innovative collection of hip hop like the "Headz" collection this is second rate stuff.
It's not a total write off however. The plangent lonely oboe on Disflex6 "The Dream" along with its ominous growling keyboards lend it a compelling doom laden air. Lovely swirls of glistening harp perambulate around the thudding percussion on "Just listen" by Edan. The scratching vocal is deftly handled too, never being over indulged to the point of annoyance. Peaches and Mignon feminist terrace anthem "Casanova" is layered with eighties style synthesiser strains. "Big shots" by Tes is carried by a military percussive air underpinned by corpulent glockenspiel. The crude "Garden Gnomes" by Danger Mouse and Sage Francis (I kid you not) has a compelling air of dramatic tension thanks to its cinematic keyboards. "Calamine Lotion (Part 3)" by J Zone utilises scratching and sampling in the same way as DJ Yoda and is enjoyable in its crass laddish way. The two offerings from Boom Bip are fine too, particularly" U R Here" with it's sapient keyboards and deep textured percussion.
On the minus side Mummy Fortunas Fortune Theatre Companys "The Toy Chest" has a hectoring rat a tat tat vocal that outstays its welcome after roughly five seconds. The lid on that toy chest is staying shut.
