The author has delivered in this book a deep understanding of what is corporate culture, it's significant influence on business performance, how to evaluate an existing organization's culture, and most importantly, how to change it to support sustainable high performance. Unlike many of the books that have been written on corporate culture over the past few decades based anecdotal or academic treatment, Leverage: The CEO's Guide to Corporate Culture is a well written, well integrated, actionable guide for executive leaders. I highly recommend this book be read by an entire executive leadership team as a first step to improving the culture of an organization which will lead to more engaged employees, more satisfied customers, and improved business performance.

John Childress has written a factual account of the ascendency of corporate culture as powerful consideration for Chief Executives who have a relentless focus on their organization's performance and how those achievements are accomplished. I appreciate the author's practical approaches to developing and shaping an organization's culture and his debunking of the many (and mostly limiting) myths that only serve to cloud the issue. The use of real life and concise examples that support John's discoveries helped me to better understand the many points that he makes. I also appreciate how the author allows me to draw my own conclusions having looked at both the pros and cons of the many points he covers.
I find this guidebook to be of such real value that I have already begun to distribute it to many of my preferred customers - especially those who are hell bent on improving the performance of their organizations. Thank you!

HASH(0x90a7e894) out of 5 stars Cut across mediocre advise, focus on what matters 1 Dec. 2013

In the world of the truth in 140 characters, management wisdom is scattered all over and very often it becomes difficult to distinguish the real trees in the real forest. This book is different because it brings up the huge experience of the author with a clear distinction between what it works and doesn’t . I have read some chapters more than once and reflected on a few ahas! that they provoke . A very good addition to the small minority of business books worth spending the time. Very useful

Not since The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People have I enjoyed a business book this much. My work is with leaders, teams and organizations and i already know this book will be a great go-to book for the future. Thanks John, for sifting through all the 'stuff' about culture and creating a smooth path of understanding for the rest of us. BRAVO!

HASH(0x90a83198) out of 5 stars Might make you think about your business. 29 Jan. 2014

Leverage is an excellent work on culture that might make you think a lot about your everyday actions and strategy decisions. The many stories, theories, insights and advice were presented following an organization that stimulates reflection. In my opinion this is an essential point for a book focused on leaders.

You will find a discussion that starts lightheartedly on the first chapters establishing an understanding for culture transforming into this compendium that reviews concepts and literature with a very practical style, with frequent mentions of companies such as Zappos, Netflix, Apple, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and others.

Ultimately, Leverage covers many topics about culture and it does this frequently reminding you that your company too has a culture, whether by design or default, and it may not be in the best alignment with your strategy and customers. The author pragmatically emphasises that people have values - and that these are hard to change - while companies have norms and behaviors. Thus, in the line of Alan Mulally's turnaround of Ford, seeking the right behaviors instead of producing a long list of written values that few people in the organisation can remember might get you closer to the desired state.
