This book isn't KS3 work, it is definitely aimed at KS2 level 3-5 (Primary School - ages 7-11 - years 3-6). The questions are broken down into sub-levels 3c, 3b, 3a, 4c, 4b, 4a, 5c, 5b, 5a.
Along with this book you get a CD-ROM of the Level Up Maths: Pupil Book (Level 3-5) (Level Up Maths). This software allows you to view the entire pupil book on a PC, allowing you to zoom into areas on the pages, access additional resources (explanations, games etc) and print the pages. When viewing pages you can write on them. This writing stays on until deleted even when pages are zoomed in or out into a two page spread. This can be used on a whiteboard easily as it runs straight from a CD - with no installation required. This could provide starters for lessons or used as a marking aid towards the end of the lessons.
The homework book directly links to the pupil book and is easy to navigate. The homework book is NOT on the CD but is easy to photocopy. These activities are also levelled, different activities from the pupil book and could be used as additional practice in lessons, extensions for specific levels or homework. The levels are on the right hand side next to the questions which could easily be blanked out if you use them for homework. Answers to the homework book questions can be found on the Heinemann website, to be downloaded in PDF (suggest you right click the link and download the file as I had problems opening it).
The pupil book on CD is exactly the same as Level Up Maths: Pupil Book (Level 3-5) (Level Up Maths)
The questions are broken down into sub-levels 3c, 3b, 3a, 4c, 4b, 4a, 5c, 5b, 5a and are accompanied by 'I can' statements. These could be used to help create success criteria. The book gives 2 short extension activities per area of work (lesson). Key vocabulary is provided at the bottom of each page (lesson). Each unit in the book gives links to real world applications, the history behind the maths and what children need to know before attempting the work (through example questions) - which could help trainees develop starters or planning to introduce a new topic, these are linked back to previous pages in the book. Each unit has a plenary (investigation) summing all the work up and has practice SATs style questions by level. Key vocabulary is summed up in bullet points `you can', these are levelled as well.
This book and CD are the most interesting items I have seen for primary maths, so far.
This CD is ideal for simple explanations with activities, maybe as starters / plenaries or while the register is being taken - children can then pick and choose what level they wish based on their confidence with a subject or how they feel on different days.
