About the Author

Steve Robinson drew upon his own family history for inspiration when he imagined the life and quest of his genealogist hero, Jefferson Tayte. The talented London-based crime writer, who was first published at age sixteen, always wondered about his own maternal grandfather. ‘He was an American GI billeted in England during the Second World War,’ Robinson says. ‘A few years after the war ended he went back to America, leaving a young family behind, and, to my knowledge, no further contact was made. I traced him to Los Angeles through his 1943 enlistment record and discovered that he was born in Arkansas…’

I’ve just finished Letters from the dead and enjoyed it very, very much ! The plot was different and extremely exciting, full of characters that are very real and very likeable. It was full of twists and turns and sucked you in right from the start. I enjoyed the story being told in the past and present and Steve Robinson carry’s it off in style. I loved the Scottish setting and Mr Robinson’s skill transported you into both the past and present parts of the tale taking you from India to Scotland very smoothly indeed. I am a huge fan of the Jefferson Tayte novels and I have enjoyed seeing Mr Robinson’s style improve in huge leaps with each new book that he brings out. Letters from the dead is his best book yet and I wonder what he will bring out next as Letters from the dead is of the very highest standard. I am already looking forward to the next instalment and with work of this level it really is worth the wait.

Once again Steve Robinson has excelled in producing a thrilling story of past lives intertwined with today's surviving lineage. The main characters, Tayte, Ross, Murray and Sinclair combine to present what life is like living in a run down Scottish mansion in the 21st century. The story, created around the near two hundred year old letters from Jane telling of a love story from 19th century and of the subsequent evil that surrounded the priceless ruby, the Blood of Rajputana.
Taytes' investigations into the family history is set in cold and wet Scotland and despite only lasting seven days produced many killings. The twist at the end was definitely unexpected.
The story is told brilliantly, always giving the reader a clear description of the characters, the settings and the times.
I presume from the final paragraph that Jefferson Tayte is likely to settle into family life and take up teaching budding genealogists, a wise man although l for one will miss his adventures.
Highly recommended as per the previous six books.

Murder Mystery? Genealogical Mystery? Yes!

As always, I had been waiting for the release of the next Jefferson Tayte genealogical mystery with great anticipation. And, as always, I was not disappointed with it. I was interested to read that although poor JT always seems to end up surrounded by death threats and dead bodies, this was the first time that Steve Robinson had actually set out to write a murder mystery rather than just a genealogical mystery. He does a great job at combining both the elements and there are definite shades of Agatha Christie to this novel.

The book follows JT in present-day Scotland as he works to unravel family history research as well as assisting in a murder investigation, and Jane Hardwick, writer of the letters telling of events that occurred in Jaipur nearly two centuries previously. The author is skilled at using this mechanism of dual storylines to build the plot and, of course, it’s the source of many moments of “I just have to read one more chapter”.

Like any good murder mystery, the characters are many and varied, and I had no idea until it was finally revealed who the murderer actually was and the reasons behind the crime. There were also plenty of questions to mull over as the book went on, and, of course, some heart-in-mouth moments, especially as our Hershey’s Miniatures-loving hero inevitably finds himself in peril.

The genealogical elements of the book are also interesting, and I almost feel disappointed that I have no ancestors who spent time in India to research! The insight into this period of British/Indian history is fascinating, and something that I knew nothing about before reading the book. As always, one can tell that the author has thoroughly researched his subjects.

All in all, I really enjoyed JT’s latest outing and can highly recommend it, and indeed the whole series, to fans of mysteries, genealogy, and historical fiction.

Thrilling mystery in Scotland and British India

Several years ago, I read the first three books in Steve Robinson’s mystery series about American genealogist Jefferson Tayte. Now I have taken up the seventh story in which Jefferson travels to Scotland to help client, Damian Sinclair, break through the brick wall concealing the identity of his four times great grandfather. But this is not just about family history, there is a legend of a valuable ruby stolen in India which the whole family hope to discover. At first Jefferson is greatly impressed by the magnificent stately home where Sinclair lives with his elderly retainer, Murray, but within the walls he finds shabby rooms and unsafe floorboards.

The parts I most enjoyed were the letters of Jane Hardwick which began in 1822 as she returned to India, a widow and companion to a friend joining her husband in Jaipur. Jane is a warm, caring woman who tries to look after teenage Arabella and her unhappy mother as their story gradually unfolds. While Jefferson explores Sinclair’s bloodline, new letters from Jane appear mentioning the legendary gemstone. But he becomes increasingly aware of danger, as one by one, members of Sinclair’s family are murdered.

This book easily stands alone as a thrilling story of love, greed and treachery. There are many red-herrings and I did not guess the outcome either in the 1820s or in the present-day denouement. Highly recommended for anyone, not just those who love genealogy.

I have read all of the books in this series and recommended them to friends. I pre-ordered this book in April and was anxiously counting down to its arrival. I was not disappointed.

It did take a while for me to work out who was who for some of the characters, but I have sat and read solidly this afternoon to finish the book which kept me guessing until the end. I could visualise the setting of the book and it was a real whodunnit.

Yes, there were some loose ends which good have been tied up (or left the the reader's imagination) but JT and his tan suit live to fight another day.

Although it is number seven in the series, it could be read as a stand alone. However, all of the books in the series are a very good read.
