Wasn't quite sure what to expect to be honest...but was pleasantly surprised and it gets better on repeated listens.
Basically, this is hip hop producer/DJ/rapper Madlib (Quasimoto) cutting up a load of stuff from the old Trojan reggae back catalogue with some nice samples and dubby echoes and stuff thrown in.
Should appeal to those wanting something other than the usual run of the mill mix CD.
If you like this, I can also recommend the Madlib "Shades of blue" mix CD he did from the Blue Note back catalogue. Of the two, I prefer the Trojan one.

When I read the tracklist before buying this I was nearly speechless. So many tracks? So many absolute gems from the Trojan vaults? This must be too good to be true. Unfortunately it was.
OK you get all those great tunes but only about a minute and a half of each of them, some of them even less. Madlib just got too stoned and too frantic with this one I feel. None of these priceless wonders (and there are loads of really rare, choice reggae cuts here) last long enough to really appreciate them. 100%, A+, 10 out of 10 for the track selections but way too trigger happy with the crossfader and siren effects.
I don't listen to this nearly as much as I should be given such a great track list. This I can only blame on Madlib's overimpulsive mixing which provides for some real moments of genius but frustrates more often than not. This is especially disappointing seeing as Madlib has done so much good work.
My advice? Go hunt down all the tracks that are listed, buy them and listen to them at your own pace.

pleasantly surprised with this, Madlid does the business once again, get it if you appreciate reggae with a different twist (the twist is the mix). Madlib choses a lot of tracks which have been sampled in hip hop, good to hear them in their 'original clothes'...

Hence the title, getting blunted to this cd is truly an experience esp. if you dont have all the dopeass underground reggae/dub that madlib got his hands on..all tracks mix together seemlessly and you never have to skip a track. blaze the trees and bump this cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just plain hottt. 23 April 2006
By CBKII - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is definitely worth picking up, there are some great reggae and dub classics in here. It also clued me in to some musicians I hadn't heard of, which is one of the main reason's I back Madlib so much. Listening to him makes you wanna dig up old music and expand your own collection, you gotta love that! At any rate, pick up this album, your Madlib collection is hurtin' without it.

Peace,

BK

4.0 out of 5 stars Blunted 29 Jun. 2005

How could you go wrong when prolific producer/mc/dj MADLIB gets his hands on the TROJAN vault? You can't... every cut is dope. ALL 45 songs are mixed well and dosed with a little madlib flavor. I wish it was a boxset..
