Brian Porter's Lest we Forget is a celebration, not of war, but of the human spirit, of bravery and courage on all sides, military and civilian. His poem Postcard from Stalingrad is superb as it could easily have been written by a soldier of either side. I defy anyone to not shed a tear at Holocaust, based on the author's father's own experience of liberating one of the concentration camps. Kamikaze reunion has tells of the continuing nightmare of war, long after the end of hostilities and there is even room for humour too, (Stop the war, I want to get off). This is a brilliant collection of poetry, each page simply dripping with emotion. Five stars without a doubt.
If you don't shed a tear while reading this book there is something wrong with you my favourites has to be Casualties of War it completely sums up the meaning of WW1 Mr .Porter has yet again produced a brilliant piece of literature.
This is a lovely book about the horrors of war. I've several friends who've served in the military, and I can tell you that war changes them forever. It's a mystery as to WHY a single event can shift a person forever to civilians, but after reading Mr. Porter' s poems, I'm starting to understand. Pick this book up today.
I have read and enjoyed quite a few books now by this tremendous writer, but this Anthology of Remembrance is a very special book indeed. Having a close family link to WW2, I was immediately drawn to this book of poetry and I found it to be deeply moving. In fact I do not feel ashamed to admit that my eyes welled up with tears whilst reading this exquisite collection of heartbreaking poetry. I like many others wear my poppy with great pride, and I will never forget the great sacrifices that these men and women gave for the freedom that we enjoy today. None of us must ever forget what has gone before, and although it is terribly difficult to read about the atrocities of war, this amazing writer has encapsulated it beautifully, and in such a way as to remain in the reader's soul forever. Please go and read this book, for it is simply a triumph!!
