Judy Beishon's new introduction does a good job of giving a concise account of the context that Lessons of October was written in and its relevance for socialists today

My advice is to buy Challenge of the Left Opposition (1923-25), which includes this, the New course, and much other material. There are two other volumes in this series, Challenge of the Left Opposition: 1926-1927 and The Challenge of the Left Opposition (1928-29). At that point there's the series Writings of Leon Trotsky, which starts with Writings of Leon Trotsky: (1929).
