Leonardo da Vinci : Painter at the Court of Milan is a stunning, superb accompaniment to this memorable exhibition. Principal contributors, both of whom have narrative authority are Luke Syson, who is Curator of Italian paintings before 1500 and Head of Research at the National Gallery and Larry Keith, Director of Conservation.

The exhibition examines Leonardo's career as a painter working in Milan and attached to the ducal court. During this period he painted both versions of the "Virgin of the Rocks," and the book illustrates them in exceptional quality. All the works on display at the exhibition are faithfully reproduced and explained in detail artistically and in context to his life.

If, like me, you have visited the exhibition, you will not need me to tell you that the paintings and drawings are breathtakingly beautiful. This book captures perfectly the enchanting and fascinating detail. If you were unable to attend, the book, is the next best thing to bring the paintings to life and it does a very effective job.

This sumptuous book will brighten your day and allow you to remember long after the paintings have been returned. Highly recommended.

Delighted with the book; all prints of drawings and paintings are of stunning quality. The text provides in depth reading and is really informative. This is the catalogue for the exhibition which is currently on display at the National Gallery, London. This is a once in a life time opportunity to see works of this world famous artist first hand. The book therefore will be a lasting reminder of the exhibition too.

I better understand how the sculptor of legend fell in love with a statue because of the subject's great beauty. Similarly I am smitten by Leonardo's Portrait of the Lady with the Ermine and his amazing skill in capturing a personality and a sense that she has listened and is about to speak. This book's commentary and illustration are of the highest order. I'm glad that I bought the hardback as this is a book that I'm sure I shall often return to for instruction and delight.

I was lucky enough to get to the National Gallery to see this original and other work by Leonardo and his contemporaries. If you were less lucky and did not get a ticket you may yet gain much from buying the book.

I was specially interested in learning how Leonardo worked from drawings, and how he manipulated and composed so as to arrive at a satisfactory portrait rather than just replicating the figure posing for him.

If you saw the National Gallery show you simply have to own this! Sumptuous plates, in-depth explanations, comprehensive references and great detail on every painting - it is the whole show - and some - in your hands. It's just sooooo good - and the Mona Lisa is in there too. A wonderful book that I'm proud to own.

For those who could not fly to London to visit the exhibition, the catalogue is much more than a matter of consolation. It is just superb. I suppose we are many wanting to know as much as possible of the Divine Painter (architect, designer, engineer), the perfect example of the liberation of art thanks to Rennaissance. The book is indispensable for the period of the time it covers in the life of Leonardo.
