The display is crisp and sharp, and the device is very responsive. The camera on it is a little bit on the poor side, but it's not really something that I really care about. I'm very happy with it as a device.
There are a few minor quibbles with it. The first is a strange bespoke android install that doesn't do things the way most devices do - there's no 'apps' tray for example that I can find, meaning everything appears on the main window. There are some other strangenesses too. It's not a big deal by any stretch of the imagination, but an annoying little quirk. The second thing is more substantial in that it doesn't come with an SD card slot. I know that's typical of devices in this price range, but it is a very significant downside to an otherwise great tablet.
As to a recommendation - it's a lovely device, but the question you need to ask yourself is whether it's worth the price given how some other tablets offer greater specs for only a small extra outlay. I certainly don't feel the *need* for any more in the tablet, but your mileage will of course vary.
Compared to an original Nexus 7, the S5000 is much lighter and thinner - an altogether more pleasant device to use in practice. It's also a little thinner than the 2013 Nexus 7 and its build quality isn't quite up there with that device - the chrome surround is a matter of personal taste for example - but it's perfectly acceptable. Unlike the Iconia B1, for example, the S5000 doesn't feel like a toy.
The 1280x800 display is, again, mid range - matching the Nexus 7 2012 but some distance behind the newer Nexus. In use, the display is bright but, compared with the N7 2013, has a greenish tinge. I can't discover whether the screen is gorilla glass or similar which leads me to suspect it isn't although I've not noticed any scratches after a month's use.
There's a bit of a theme developing - performance wise, the S5000 is virtually identical to the original Nexus 7 with a Geekbench 3 score of 325 (single core) and 1042 (multi-core). The 2013 Nexus 7, by contrast, scores 581 and 1835 respectively and is noticeably faster in use - especially when, for example, the device is updating apps. In practice, however, the S5000 copes well with everything I've thrown at it so far, including Plants Vs Zombies 2 and Minion Rush (a game which tends to push devices pretty hard). I doubt it would cope with the most demanding games but it's pretty solid.Read more ›
So down to Tablet:
Build is very solid and does not feel flimsy at all. Very slim and light which makes it easy to hold and use for a long period of time. This the 3G model and the sim card is a micro SIM which fits perfectly. Buttons are sturdy and responsive. It has onscreen buttons for home etc.
Software: Android 4.2 comes pre-loaded and it is fast, I have updated to 4.4 which has made it tiny bit slower but nothing noticeable. However, the feel of 4.4 feels more user friendly than 4.2 so I am happy with it.
Camera: Decent pics, nothing amazing but does the job if you need to take a few shots and your phone is not with you.
Speaker is ok and fairly standard, does the job.
Wifi and 3G: Very good and very easy to setup. I used my normal Virgin mobile micro sim which has 2GB data and I am able to use the data and send/ receive texts.
Overall, for a price of £90 (after cashback) this is the best ever 3G tablet I have used and I am very happy with it. Lenovo have really done a good job for it. I just hope it has longevity and does not break down.
Buy it! You will not regret it!
