Would not hesitate to recommend to anybody.
In you've not heard of Lenovo, they took over from IBM - whom I'm sure you'll have heard of. A big company who've produced a decent Chromebook.
- Screen is clear and bright
- Folding screen is great for watching movies
- Keyboard is good for a machine this size
- Its well powered for a Chromebook, negligible lag or delay
- Battery life is excellent
- Touchscreen is more useful than you would imagine on a Chromebook
- You might be surprised how much can be done without an internet connection
- Keyboard does bend a little if you hit the keyboard as hard as I do when I type
- The touch pad can be a little hit an miss, sometimes responding when I dont expect it to.
- Chrome is still limited in its support of video formats
At the end of the day this is a Chromebook with all the advantages and limitations this brings. For me I wanted the battery life, size, convenience of a tablet (which I already own), but I cannot type emails/blogs effectively on a tablet so needed a decent keyboard.
As Chromebooks go I think this is a pretty good buy, especially if you can get it for around £199 (check Lenovo's site!)
To begin with let's look at the regular features of this Chromebook. The design is slim, attractive and stylish without being revolutionary but with a distinctly above average build quality. It has all the usual ports including HDMI, although the HDMI port is a mini one which means a special cable or adapter will be needed for use.
The 1366 x 768 screen is good but not great, the lack of an IPS screen means the viewing angles are less than on IPS equipped devices and the display although perfectly good could be brighter. The Lenovo N20P Chromebook is available in two configurations, with the only difference between the two being the processors: this one, the cheaper of the two, comes with a 2.16GHz Intel Celeron N2830 processor, and the other comes with an Intel Celeron N2930 1.83GHz processor. In day to day use I doubt if most users will notice the difference between the two.
This machine has 4gigs of memory installed and although there is a cheaper version with just two gigs the reduced memory will hamper performance somewhat and that model is best avoided.
The low energy using Bay Trail processor promises a battery life of around 8 hours. I have not found this but maybe I have been using the machine more than would be expected. The battery life I found to be good but not exceptional.
As regards the Unique Selling Points of the Lenovo 720p these are the inclusion of a 10 point touch screen and a Stand Mode whereby the screen that will physically revolve through 300 degrees whilst flipping the display to allow the device to be used as a viewing device keyboard free and with a on demand pop up on screen keyboard.
How useful the touch screen is for an Operating System and hardware format not really designed for it is questionable - pressing the little icons and buttons can be fiddly and often slower than using the keypad. It does allow for pinch to zoom, which you cannot do from the trackpad.
The Stand mode is nice but it is a pity the screen will not revolve completely allowing the device to be as a tablet. Again, I am not sure how useful it will be to most people.
It also offers the latest Bluetooth 4 and 11AC wifi connectivity, amongst the first Chromebooks to do so.
On balance this is an attractive and well built machine, a solid and reliable performer with some new features which may or may not prove useful in the long term.
Stylish and attractive design
802.11 a/c WiFi
low power Bay Trail CPU
4Gig memory installed
Touchscreen mode limited and unproven
No full tablet capability
No full sized HDMI port
Battery life good but not as much as expected
No IPS screen
When inserted SD cards stick out prominently from the casing
+ Fair price point
+ Low heat output at all
+ Stable and secure Chrome OS (using beta Channel)
Now list of negatives, but these could be more like adressed to Lenovo than to other potential customers. All of the items below are result of cost-cutting applied to this chromebook. I would probably prefere a little bit extra costs for a little bit higher specs
- The keyboard is not what I would expect from Lenovo
- Screen is a weakness (mine cell phone has higher resolution)
- Wieght - I have upgraded from Samsung ARM so this machine is heavier
+- The tent mode is fun, but I haven't found any reasonable usage for it :)
