The IdeaPad S300 laptops are only 22.4mm thin but are packed with great features. Best of all, you'll find they are more affordable than an Ultrabook while giving you the power and portability you need most.
Intel Pentium ULV Processor
The key to balancing weight, performance and battery life when on the move is the Intel Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) processor. This Pentium processor is designed to operate at lower voltages, drawing less power and generating less heat than equivalent mobile processors while still giving you the performance you need.
Fast Memory and Spacious Storage
Inside of the Lenovo IdeaPad S300 you'll find fast DDR3 RAM to help your laptop handle the most demanding of multitasking tasks. You'll also find a large hard drive perfect for storing your files and favourite multimedia.

Dolby Advanced Audio 2.0
The Lenovo IdeaPad S300's speakers are custom tuned by Dolby to maximise volume and to eliminate distortion. Experience less audio distortion at higher volumes with the built-in speakers, and enjoy a cinematic surround sound experience.
13.3" HD Display
Movies, games and the Internet all come to life on the Lenovo IdeaPad S300. Thanks to the 13.3" display you'll be able to enjoy your favourite films and web videos in HD resolution (1366 x 768) and in glorious 16:9 widescreen.
HDMI for Big Screen Entertainment
You can also enjoy your multimedia on the big screen by using the built-in HDMI port to hook your laptop up to a HDTV, monitor or projector - ideal for sharing your favourite videos and movies with friends.
USB 3.0 for Faster Connections
By connecting the Lenovo IdeaPad S300 to a compatible USB 3.0 device, such as an external drive, you can experience up to 10 times faster transfer rates than standard USB 2.0. This means that files and folders that took hours to transfer now just take minutes and you can move whole albums to and from your laptop in just a few seconds, saving you time and making your media much more portable.
Built-in HD 720p Webcam
Take your web chats to the next level thanks to the built-in HD webcam. Your friends and family will be able to see you in clear 720p resolution, which means the picture will look great even on a large TV screen.
Enhanced User Experience
Lenovo Quick Start
Get online in seconds with the Lenovo Quick Start 'instant on' function. Quick Start bypasses the complicated Windows booting-up process to give you access to your PC and the Internet within seconds. Enjoy instant gratification at the touch of a button - be it music, videos, email and social media or simply browsing the web.
The AccuType keyboard you'll find on the Lenovo IdeaPad S300 is designed to help easy cleaning & maintenance and avoid the accumulation of dust and crumbs over time. The finger-friendly curved key shape and ergonomic spacebar will work together to make it easier to type and reduce the number of typos, wherever you find yourself working.
The one-piece Intelligent Touchpad makes your entire touchpad experience more intuitive. You'll find the freedom to use multi-finger gestures to perform common tasks - whether it's a two-finger movement to rotate an image or a three-finger swipe to move between multiple pages/images.
OneKey Rescue System
You can rest at ease knowing OneKey Rescue System is there to simplify data backup and recovery, allowing you to focus on using your computer instead of worrying about its maintenance. With the touch of a button users can restore the system and recover valuable data - the OneKey Rescue System also recovers essential system files in the event of corruption and can be used to initiate a virus scan before entering Windows.
You can also ensure that your data is always protected with DirectShare, which easily synchronises your files another machine without connecting to the internet allowing you to have a copy of your data on another machine.
Lenovo Energy Management 7.0
With Lenovo Energy Management 7.0, users are able to run their machine in a variety of different modes depending on their needs. Power-Saver mode allows laptops to run exceptionally quietly with reduced fan noise. Balanced mode auto-detects user behaviour and knows when to run in a lower performance mode, allowing for increased energy savings. High-Performance mode utilises a combination of high performance and thermal solutions to increase performance levels.
Users can also protect and prolong their battery health using features such as battery protection mode and battery gauge. Lenovo's energy management system can even monitor the laptop behaviour and remind users to choose battery modes that best suit their style of use.

I did not realize this when I bought it. I assumed all laptops had them!
All in all, a good laptop with a top brand.
I bought this laptop about a month ago for my wife - she needed something similar to this as I now use the desktop a lot.
We couldn't be happier with the purchase. It's light, fast enough to do everything she wants (internet, emails, writing, etc...) and looks nice. I will completely agree with the other reviews, this is a cheap laptop and the price is reflected in its quality - but this is a £280 laptop, not an Alienware. I have no doubt that this laptop will last, considering what it's used for, and the fact it wont really be moved much.
Just like you can't expect to take a Ford Fiesta off-road like you can with a Range Rover. It's a different product, in a completely different price bracket.
+ As an alternative to the ultra sexy slimline Samsung Series 3 and 5, this laptop is very nice to look at (i've had lots of compliments from friends!) really slim, light enough to carry/pick-up with one hand.. but not fragile feeling.
+ It starts up reasonably quickly, and after a month and lots of programs being installed, plus some unintentional adware, it still colds starts in 40 seconds. I've not investigated the Lenovo Quick Start yet.
+ It has a pretty lovely keyboard which is nice to use.
The function buttons across the top of the keyboard are changed so that the shortcut function (eg. Alt+F4 to close a window) no longer requires a combination to use. You just press F4 to close the top window. I like what they've done here, however I have accidentally closed a window several times when i've mis-pressed one of the number keys. It'll come down to personal preference.
+ I'm pleased that it doesn't have the usual myriad of buttons for sleep/home/ etc above the keyboard (I never used these on my old Dell XPS M1710) just the power button and the One Key Rescue Button (which I havn't explored either yet).
+ My previous Dell had a monster of a battery and adapter. The S300 has a really smart battery, and a tiny adapter.
+ The underside of the laptop is clean, with no access panels which is good I suppose until you need to replace your RAM. (My old Dell had several access panels, I never did figure understand what for apart from the RAM panel.)
+ I've really seen the difference between USB 2 and 3 with this laptop - Wish there were more than 1 USB 3 on this machine for those times when you have 2 devices plugged in..
- Battery life is certainly not the 5 hours as stated, under normal internet browsing, with the odd document opened, maybe a youtube clip or two, I get 2-2.5 hours.
- The ULV processor does produce some heat out of the left hand side of the machine when it's on my lap. Although it seems well ventilated on both sides and I think underneath aswell, afair bit of heat comes out the left hand side. Nothing serious, but enough to keep your left leg warm. I havn't run any demanding games/programs yet so have yet to see how it performs heat wise.
- As mentioned by other reviewers, the trackpad isn't good. I'm not sure how they've done it, but indeed when you make contact with the pad the mouse pointed can jump *sometimes*. I actually don't mind too much as you quickly get used to it, and you can get around it by using the nicely integrated buttons instead of tapping on the pad for a left click. But certainly for occasional users, like when a friend is using it, they will get frustrated.
- Obviously no optical drive, but i've picked one an external USB one for £20 from Amazon.
The machine itself is slim, light weight, has a good screen size and looks rather nice. After booting and completing the setup everything was fully working within minutes. Networking (both wired and wireless) was up and running without any problems. The keyboard is pretty good to use and I prefer my travel mouse so the trackpad isn't an issue for me. I plugged in my external USB drives and CD ROM and was able to copy files and install software. All the software I have been using previously and wanted to transfer across has worked without a hitch.
The laptop came with Windows 8, not Windows 7 as advertised and at first I was in two minds whether to return it. But after spending a while 'learning' the new interface I managed to get the hang of it. I even ended up installing third party software to provide a Windows 7 style Start Menu and the ability to boot straight into the desktop (by passing Windows 8 tiled start screen)!
Very happy with my purchase so far and my only criticism is that it came with Windows 8 but as mentioned I've managed to settle down and work with it. The quick startup is most impressive and the machine also had a 500 GB disk drive not the 320 GB described in the specification on Amazon. Overall this is a very good piece of equipment for the price.
From my personnel experience I would definitely recommend this Ultrabook.
Update: Nov 2015:-
Now over two years on and this laptop continues to serve me well and turned out to be a very worthwhile purchase for the price I paid.
