Double tapping the trackpad didn't work half the time. Eventually I realised its simply a matter of dropping the double click speed in the Windows mouse settings by one step, now works perfectly.
The 1600x900 screen changes colour/contrast badly when tilted past about 20 degrees vertical, and slightly when past about 45 degrees horizontal, but for the price is very good and this is rarely a problem. It shouldn't suffer from screen burn / image retention that some newer (IPS?) screens may have? The display is reflective gloss, and isn't a touch screen.
The keyboard isn't backlit, but there's a 17" lamp nearby ;-)
Its weight isn't too noticable at any time - until you want to move it!
The base stays VERY cool (the base of my old netbook PC could almost burn you). Almost silent fan.
Full size SD card slot on the left (SD card hangs out about half way when plugged in)
The small stereo speakers on the top seem fine to me.
Windows 8.1 is a bit weird, but usable (Windows-x and Windows-e seem good shortcuts). Hopefully a free upgrade to Windows 9 in October 2014?
Fits into a briefcase I already had. Compact power adaptor.
Good to have the built-in DVD drive for installing software, watching films, and creating a startup disk, and image backup of the C drive etc. to DVD+ disks.
However, before doing this I Googled "Make Windows 8 look like Windows 7". A few minutes later I had downloaded and installed the free software, 'Classic Shell' and now I have Windows 8 user interface looking just the same as Windows 7.
It does the job a treat and now I don't have to spend half a day re-configuring the laptop!
Aesthetics and Build Quality
In every angle you position the laptop, it always looks strong and sexy at the same time. When the lid is closed, it has a very sleek black color with just the 'lenovo' logo in the corner. Perfect. No patterns or weird textures that doesn't look right. When the lid is up, you realize how much detail has gone into the laptop. The frame is not overly big, but just right so you feel it can fit the big 17 inch monitor, but not so big it get's in the way. The base of the laptop looks and feels very strong, no cheap plasticy feeling that some laptops have. When I turned the Laptop upside down, and took off the back to see how the parts are positioned in the Laptop, I was completely shocked. I studied the Laptop for a second, and thought it was strange because there were only two screw holes and no indications of where any parts were positioned, I unscrewed the two screws next to the battery, and the whole back came off - (that wasn't the part that shocked me) - the part that shocked me, was that Lenovo purposely made the parts inside 'User Friendly' which means that every single part of the computer is exposed just from taking off the back cover! The processor with heat-sink is there, the RAM, CMOS Battery, Wireless Adapter, Hard Drive, all there. No more taking the whole laptop apart to get, let's say, the Processor. It feels like Lenovo is on the 'peoples' side instead of being like a typical corporation and hiding the parts inside the computer, so it is really tricky for you to change the part.Read more ›
The installed OS is Windows 8.1 with no option to downgrade to Windows 7. Don't let that put you off. I'd never even seen Win 8 before receiving the G710, but a couple of hours fairly interesting and intriguing familiarisation have left me with no desire to change back to the older OS. Lenovo have eased the change by pre-installing the start menu application Pokki, look for the white house symbol on the desktop task bar. Pokki provides very convenient access to apps and to things such as Device Manager, Network & Sharing etc that Windows has always kept hidden away in Control Panel, and there is even an option in its Settings menu to boot to the desktop rather than to the infamous Metro start screen. The best tip I can give before you start Windows 8 for the first time is to make sure in advance you have a Microsoft ID, because you will need one. I registered my gmail address as my Microsoft ID, and your email address will be fine for you.
* General performance is excellent, very zippy, excepting only the hard drive, see below.
* The 1600 x 900 screen is lovely, if maybe not the most punchy.
* Build quality feels fine, and the finish does not make it a fingerprint magnet.
* The keyboard is well up to Lenovo's usual high standards.
* Bloatware is minimal, so you don't have to spend ages removing the likes of McAfee.
* Oh yes, it most definitely has a DVD R/W drive.
* Only three USB ports, and only one of them USB3.Read more ›

The screen takes a while to 'warm up', starting green and splotchy and gradually clearing. It is very slow.
If you make any demands on your computer, do not buy this.
