I've had this phone for around 3 months now. I hadn't felt the need to review it until I read an earlier review here - one which is, frankly, ridiculous. Some of the points made by this reviewer are clearly daft and will be recognised as such, but others are misleading/needlessly critical in less obvious ways.

1. If you set it to "english" you won't see any chinese anywhere near your keyboard inputs.
2. The viewing angles of the screen aren't poor. Most people will find the screen more than acceptable. "True HD" resolutions on a screen 4" in size are a gimmick.
3. If you buy a chinese mobile - from China - intended for the Chinese market then it will have chinese apps on it. To flag this up as a negative is moronic. If you want a full-featured Android experience google "cybermaus xda a789" - you'll find details of how to replace the software on the phone with one that includes Google Play.
4. The processor has more than enough poke. It lets me download video using bittorrent in the background, while i listen to music, while I also play games. My last mobile would have exploded had I tried that.
5. Wi-fi is very good, as is cell reception. In places where my Dad's expensive Nokia can't get a signal the Lenovo is crystal clear.
6. If you shop around you can get this phone for around £100. At this price it's an absolute steal and there is nothing at this price-point that can touch it. Decent processor, 3G, dual-sim, good screen, dedicated GPS, FM transmitter, nice camera/video (no flash, but very good in low light).
7. Build quality is very pleasing. Plastic backing but the bulk of the frame is metal. Very solid.
8. Battery lasts a couple of days even with fairly heavy use.
9.

Very nice phone.

Set to English Language, but operation manual is in Chinese and most of the Apps.
A charge lasts about 5 hours.

Aside from that it's works very well.

I've seen this phone, it's fine from a business user perspective. It looks fine, it runs Android 4.0.4, it has a nice grip on the back cover and the standby button is easy to reach and push.

What I did't like at Lenovo A789 MTK 6577 Android 4.0 3G Smartphone Dual Card Dual Standby Quad Band with 4" Touch Screen and WiFi/GPS (Black) UNLOCKED bought from a non-amazon seller:
- the sample I received came with a bug in the dialer app, the caller ID was shown with chinese symbols, even if the phone was set to use english language. I'm sure this can ve fixed in a firmware update or with an alternate ROM
- the screen is not IPS type, so when the screen is a little bit turned up/down/left or right it starts to look different, like older TN computer displays. It has a narrow good viewing angle.
- only the first SIM can use 3G/WCDMA
- It has a lot of chinese apps, which require manual uninstallation. The most important app which is also full of chinese symbols is the default calendar app.
- It lacks the presence of a compass sensor. If you want to know your geographic orientation, an application able to calculate/use the heading information from GPS must be used.
- It lacks the presence of a notification led and camera light.

I didn't remove the screen protector which was applied from the seller/factory, so I have no clue how scratch resistant the screen is.
Since this phone is built for the chinese market, the default ROM is full of chinese apps and lacks Google Play. What you buy outside China may be pre-rooted and it also may have Google Play installed by the seller (or its supplier).

I replaced the A789 with a P700i, which has a better screen and a bigger batery life. This one still lacks camera light (LED) and the notification LED, it's a little bit uglier and bigger, but it has a much better screen.

I use mine mainly as a phone, with texts and email, with a couple of apps used regularly, ie maps and weather.
I'd like longer battery life and camera flash that it doesn't have.
My previous phone was a Nokia N97, and I like the android better.
It's good as a phone, slightly too small for use as a tablet.
I intend to use it next as a satnav with bluetooth.
I am using both SIM slots, that only one is data enabled suits me fine.
The body is not showing any wear, and the glass has only a couple of small and minor scratches.
I don't notice that it does anything worse or does less than, more expensive and 'prestigious' brands.
I'd recommend one, I think it's good value.
