Screws fall out for no apparent reason. Mousepad screws around going in and out randomly. The casing is now being ripped apart every time I open the lid. Have had this piece of crap just over a year (conveniently out of warranty) and will never buy Lenovo again. Such poor quality.
I read reviews about sluggish performance but have not experienced this at all, even after I loaded the laptop with Adobe Acrobat Pro 10, Adobe Photoshop Elements 13 and Microsoft Office 2013 which I managed to buy through the Microsoft Home User Program (HUP) for under £10 through my former employer before I retired. It is worth investigating to see if your employer qualifies for this program as there are huge savings on full MS Office programs for employees. I have found very little bloatware but I will probably wipe the McAfee antivirus software as this was a temporary licence and now the program is requesting my email address without allowing me to know the full cost of a licence. McAfee has lost me as a potential customer because of this. I shall probably load up the Malwarebytes antivirus program which is inexpensive and has received good reviews. I think Lenovo must have realised the stupidity of loading bloatware onto a low specification machine where the effects of bloatware would cause more problems than on a higher spec device.
I like the textured finish of the laptop but not so keen on the shiny finish of the screen bevel. The laptop is slim which obviously contributes to its lightness but it still manages to have a DVD writer. There is flex in the laptop but as long as one is careful, I cannot see problems. A good laptop case or sleeve is necessary if you are going to transport it and the Case Logic sleeve is one I can recommend. Looking through the Amazon website, I do believe that AmazonBasic's own case at £9.99 for 15-15.6 inch laptops is a Case Logic item and should be the one to head for if a soft case is required. The Case Logic branded item on Amazon seems to be a harder case. The laptop battery lasts for about four hours and this is the first laptop I have owned that runs cool. The sound from the Dolby speakers is good and the speakers are placed at the front but underneath the casing. The sound can be easily extinguished, reduced or increased using the F1, F2and F3 keys. There is a camera at the top of the screen which would be good for Skyping or occasional mug shots. I bought myself a MS 1000 cordless mouse because I think one can work and surf faster but the touch pad seems plenty adequate. The power plug is oblong shaped and fits any way around with no fuss.
I'm still feeling my way with Windows 8.1 but it has caused me no problems although I feel it is better suited to a touch screen device. However, I'm pleased to see that the simple tasks of reaching the traditional/familiar Desktop or Windows Explorer screens are still achieved by pressing the Microsoft button plus either the D or E keys. I am even starting to use Microsoft OneDrive for Cloud storage. I'm hoping to be able to switch to Windows 10 for free when it is available this year. I think the Windows 8.1 experience is even getting me to consider getting a Windows mobile to sync with my MS Office programs. I'm starting to feel that Microsoft is at last finding its feet and Windows 10 may be the Android killer!
This Lenovo laptop has been a good experience for me. I like using my MS Office programs and doing research on the internet. I'm not an avid gamer and this laptop is not meant for this activity, but as a simple workhorse I find I can have many tabs and programs open without noticing any slowdown in performance. So this was money well spent and I'm not sure where you would find better value in a laptop of similar size. I would purchase a Lenovo product again based on this experience.
I eventually succumbed and purchased a one-year licence for the McAfee LiveSafe antivirus program at a cost of £29.99 discounted from £79.99. It was the ability to wipe my documents remotely in the event that the laptop was stolen that was the clincher for me. You can also load the antivirus program onto all your other devices including a Windows phone at no extra cost. It remains to be seen whether I will renew after the one-year has elapsed when the price reverts to normal costs, but I suppose if I am using it on multi devices then the value may be regarded as reasonable.
The TV app is absolutely brilliant as I can now watch BBC TV progammes when travelling, whereas previously when outside the UK I was prevented from watching BBC TV programmes because of licencing problems. There are many other TV channels offered.
I do seem to experience the odd missing letter or space when typing, but this is only an irritation and not a major problem. I think I just need to apply a firmer pressure when typing
Just one thing...not a fan of Windows 8...
As I work in IT it was fairly straightforward to set up, but again Lenovo let themselves down with the enormous amount of bloatware that they load onto their new machines. This is particularly true of the infamous Superfish utility which set the alarm bells off in AVG from the get go. The PC itself can be setup within half an hour or so, and it only takes that amount of time due to Windows setting itself up, etc. I spent longer than that removing all the superfluous Lenovo utilities. I recommend installing CCCleaner and a good virus guard; AVG Free was great in flagging up all the bloatware that I'd missed.
Once all that is out of the way the machine itself is very good. The keyboard is responsive, the screen is nice and bright and displays colours well. As it has 8.1 pre-installed it now boots directly to the desktop without having to mess around in the settings. My Dad has this sited in his backroom in his flat - the router is in his living room - and I noticed that the wifi reception is a lot weaker compared to that creeking Toshiba, so that's something to take note of. However, it works perfectly though and he doesn't experienced any connection outages, etc.
Within days he contacted me as he had received the messages regarding Windows 10, good to know that the new operating system is being rolled out free from July 29th.
All-in-all, this is a great value laptop and is more than adequate for surfing, emailing and banking which is really all my Dad does on his laptop. Once I had gotten rid of all the bloat I was surprised how well it performed considering its modest price.
Get rid of the rubbish and you'll have yourself a nice little performer.
