Product description

Product Description

The debut release from Finders Keepers Records, we present the seminal 1972 album from Serge Gainsbourg’s right-hand man Jean-Claude Vannier. Recorded during the same sessions as Gainsbourg’s highly acclaimed masterpiece "Melody Nelson" it follows in a similar avant-garde rock-opera vein. "L’Enfant Assasin Des Mouches" (The Child Fly-Killer) is a supernatural tale written by Gainsbourg depicting the journey of the young child travelling through a nightmarish "Fly Kingdom". Vannier narrates the story with sparse music concrete sounds coupled with choirs, funky beats, cowbells, wah-wah guitars and ethnic strings. Comparisons could be made with some of Frank Zappa’s "Hot Rats" material and Alain Goraguer’s creepy "Le Planet Sauvage".

At the time this was released as a promo only in ridiculously small numbers (around 100) and is regarded as the Holy Grail among French psych and prog collectors. Also included on the CD are the obscure funk instrumentals taken from equally rare 7" issued to accompany the T.V drama series "Point D’Interrogation".

Featuring extensive story liner notes including an exclusive pictures of Vannier working with Gainsbourg, as wells an interview with Vannier himself.

Faithfully reproduced packaging, and the vinyl is an exact re-pro deluxe gatefold sleeve and all tracks are beautifully remastered!

Carries a cover mount sticker with personal endorsements from DAVID HOLMES, TIM GAINES (Stereolab), JIM O’ROURKE (Sonic Youth), & JARVIS COCKER (Pulp).

First time on CD and is a fitting first release from Finders Keepers Records, run by Manc-based vinyl-vulture, recording artist and record producer ANDY VOTEL (TWISTED NERVE), fellow B-MUSIC DJ and designer DOMINIC THOMAS and CHERRY RED’s ‘Rare-Disc-Detective’ DOUG SHIPTON.

I found this record in the easy listening section of the local record shop. Easy it is not.
The story of the genesis of this truly remarkable album is given at length in the linear notes and makes for fascinating reading - I won't repeat them here.
However, it is the music, and not the back-story, that should make you buy this album.
On first listen Vannier seemed to be throwing every trick he knew into the mix. Overdubs, strange noises, sitars, feedback, swooping strings, unexpectedly repeated phrases. It was all a little too much to take in.
On the second listen it all started to coalesce. I doubt that this will ever be a relaxing listen but it is certainly a very exciting one. Despite repeated listens I am still surprised by the directions in which that Vannier takes the music.
There are definate traces of psych and prog here, with dashes of funk and beat and a very Gallic love of chanson (despite the lack of singing) and drama. However, at no point does any song really sound like anything else you will ever have heard.
And that's what makes it so thrilling!

The sticker on this CD carries a quote from Jarvis Cocker where he indicates his first hearing of this record made him feel as though he was 'on something' and I can understand why! You've almost certainly never heard anything like this before. Imagine a mash-up between early Pink Floyd, 70s detective show theme tunes and the score to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and I think you'd be getting close. I love it, but some of my friends now look at me with a hint of supsicion after I played it to them...

This is a fantastic album.

Really funky and really bizarre in places. It reminded me of the orchestral parts of Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd.

It was written by sometime Serge Gainsbourg arranger and there's moments when you can tell, but it really is a unique sound as it is combined with some advant gard sounds and voices.

If you want something a bit different, buy this.

You can take it as a good sign going into my review of Le' Infant Assasin De Mouches that I have no idea how to describe it to you. When you buy and listen to music by the box, a piece this unclassifiable is refreshing.

Who needs labels when we have sound, tons of it. Jean Claude Vannier
s 1970 aural skyscraper is filled with holy cross guitars, LSD courses, music concrete', a huge post-psychedelic mess of an album: the strings here are particularly rich, and if you have heard Vannier's arranging on Serge Gainsbourg's Histoire de Melody Nelson, you'll hear this and understand why he was hired.

I can't find a lot of logic in how this is sequenced, but that may be the idea. After you play this for two or more minutes, you surrender, lay back and go where the sound takes you. If the journey is random, the impact makes it more than worth taking.

5.0 out of 5 stars For once, the hype was worth it. 18 Jan. 2007
By Mars Nova - Published on Amazon.com

I'm trying to be a more educated and wary rare-groove connoisseur. I can recall being burned time and again by reissues that promise you Thomas's but can't even make toast when the smoke clears. So, even though I've come to trust Andy Votel's recommendations a lot more over the past year, I was a little uncertain when I looked over the albums he's putting his weight behind on the Finders Keepers label--namely, this one.

But, ya know something? This would have to rank as my first favorite discovery of 2007--the hype turned out to be worth it. "L' Enfant Assassin des Mouches" is just as twisted, graceful and psychedelic as the liner notes and tons of hipster critics say it is--it most definitely qualifies as the "psychedelic symphony" it claims to be on the cover.

If you need an idea of what to expect, loosen yourself up with some music in a similar vein--music like Aphrodite's Child's "666," the "Fantastic Planet" soundtrack and (of course) Serge's "Melody Nelson." If you can get down with those three albums, this one'll take you on yet another tour through those same trippy landscapes. Votel's picked another gem...check it out.
