Product Description

Product Description

Compact size, intuitive handling and a high-performance 12 x zoom lens make the Leica V-Lux 20 the perfect companion to have around wherever you happen to be - for every day photgraphy, touring the city or holidaying by the beach.

For living memories

Compact, easy to use and delivering outstanding optical quality, the Leica V-Lux 20 is the ideal camera for travelers. During one young couple's journey to Havana, the V-Lux 20 had the chance to prove its worth. The dynamic Cuban capital can be almost overwhelming in its abundance of fascinating images. Thanks to its zoom lens and its enormous range of focal lengths, the V-Lux 20 effortlessly mastered every photographic challenge and delivered vivid travel memories in superb quality.

The Leica V-Lux 20 is the perfect tool with which to capture those wonderful moments in life as high quality pictures. Direct, spontaneous, and intuitive. This is made possible by numerous automatic functions and a versatile 12 x zoom lens with an enormous focal range from 25 to 300 mm. The optional manual setting of apertures and shutter speeds offers even the most demanding photographers complete creative control. With the latest advanced features such as HD movie and optional GPS image tagging1, the V-Lux 20 offers the greatest possible flexibility and ease of use - for still photography or movies when you are out and about, and even for archiving pictures already taken.
A camera for people who appreciate quality and love to own and use something special.

Enormous focal length

The Leica DC-Vario-Elmar 1:3.3 - 4.9 / 4.1 - 49.2 mm ASPH. (25 - 300mm) zoom of the V-Lux 20 is a lens with extraordinarily high performance. Its high-quality zoom enables the use of an enormous range of focal lengths from 25 to 300 mm for both photos and video recording. For macro photography, extremely wide-angle views, or zooming in on distant subjects - the V-Lux 20 captures amazingly sharp images across the entire wide-angle to telephoto range. When shooting with longer focal lengths or in poor light, optical image stabilisation effectively prevents blurred or shaky pictures. The V-Lux 20 features a 12.1 effective megapixel sensor. Flexible use of the sensor format guarantees full exploitation of the entire zoom range (35 - mm equivalent: 25 - 300 mm) in all possible image aspect ratios, whether set for 4:3, 3:2, or 16:9.

Easy, intuitive handling

Leica cameras have always been designed for the best-possible handling. The ergonomically-positioned and logically-arranged controls of the Leica V-Lux 20 ensure intuitive handling of the camera for less experienced photographers. A wide range of automated functions ensures even simpler handling.
At the same time, manual setting options for aperture values and shutter speeds provide greater creative scope for more demanding or experienced users. The mode-selection dial on the camera's top plate allows fast and simple switching between the various automatic modes and manual operation.
Just the way a Leica should be: intuitive handling for perfect pictures.

Movies in HD quality

The 720p HD movie function is a further addition to the versatile features of the Leica V-Lux 20. Movies are recorded in M-JPEG HD format, tagged with GPS data. HD movie recording is started with the touch of a button on the back of the camera. Once recording, the "director" can concentrate completely on the subject or scene, because the intelligent automatic systems of the V-Lux 20 integrate all the essential functions such as face recognition, automatic scene capture selection, and smart exposure for stills and movie recording.

Integrated GPS function

The compact size and enormous zoom range of the Leica V-Lux 20 make it an ideal companion when you are out and about. And its integrated GPS tagging function is another excellent reason to take it along wherever you go. This innovative feature records the geographical coordinates of the location and the local time of every picture you shoot, and stores this information in the EXIF data of the image files. This provides a multitude of exciting possibilities and benefits. When traveling with the V-Lux 20, it displays all the sights in the immediate neighbourhood. In fact, it has access to a total of 500,000 such points of interest across 73 countries. And each picture can reveal exactly where it was shot on maps published in social networks, image portals, and map services like Google Maps or Google Earth.

Easy image processing

As a very special extra, the Leica V-Lux 20 is supplied complete with a copy of the powerful, easy-to-use, complete image processing solution Adobe® Photoshop® Elements 8.0. This software package enables fast and convenient media management and intuitive post-processing of photos and movies. Never before has it been so easy to make incomparable pictures for printing, online galleries, and mobile devices.

There is something extraordinary about Leica cameras, which seems to make every model infinitely greater than the sum of its parts. The V-Lux 20 is no exception. It is beautifully made and just oozes style and sophisticated quality. As soon as you see the price, however, you will realise that there are plenty of other cameras that offer more features for less money. Brands like Lumix, Canon and Samsung spring to mind. But the results this very simple and compact camera delivers time after time are simply stunning. It just does the job. Leica lenses really are in a class of their own. And that is what you're paying for. The V-Lux 20 menu system is highly intuitive making the camera simple and easy to use. What attracted me to this camera was the pictures a friend had taken with an earlier V-Lux model. I had previously owned (and lost) a much more capable Sony camera and found that most of the time I didn't use many of its features because they were buried somewhere in its menu system or I forgot to turn them on. With or without its advanced features, the photos it produced were okay rather than stunning. With this Leica, you just point and shoot. Presto! You're Ansel Adams or David Bailey. In other words, it just works. Its ability to reproduce colour and subtle light borders on magical. If price is a deal breaker, then you may be better off with a Lumix (which have Leica lenses); but if you want cutting edge German design and engineering in a camera that is bound to go on snapping great photos long after most other models have been consigned to history, then this is it. It has a wonderfully tactile feel and the manufacturing quality is Mercedes-Benz-like. For most people, most of the time, this is all the camera you'll ever need. I love it. As a previous reviewer said, it really is a future classic.

Have used mine now for over a year. Because of its size and the quality of its pictures, I now use it in preference to my Nikon D3000 kit. Like other reviewers, I agree that it is simple to use, takes beautifully crisp pictures, is built solidly (as are all Leicas) and is quite stylish. (But which came first, this Leica or its Panasonic Lumix equivalent, which is almost identical, has a Leica lens and is much, much cheaper?)

Pluses: all the above, and something that hasn't been mentioned: colours are reproduced wonderfully by the lens system on this camera, especially saturated colours (autumn light, sky, etc.)

Minuses: no viewfinder. OK, I know that they are becoming rarer on compact digital cameras, but having to focus through the LCD display, however clear, is a pain and causes more camera shake and discarded shots than I am happy with. With a camera capable of producing such beautiful images, this is disappointing.

Then there is the price. Is it worth it? For me, yes, because of the quality of the images, the robustness of the build (I owned a Lumix equivalent, and it hasn't lasted as well) and, let's face it, the Leica brand. But for many of you reading this, you might think that you could do a lot better with a high quality, high spec, digital compact from a Panasonic, Sony, Fuji or the like and even a Nikon or similar D/SLR kit, including another zoom lens. I think, as with all Leicas, price is going to be a valid concern.

More money than sense? Maybe.
