HASH(0x9287ca68) out of 5 stars Die Leibstandarte...a Photographic Triumph! 9 April 2008
By Kevin J. Callinan Jr. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I would like to echo C.D. Turner's praise for Trang's Die Liebstandarte..It is most excellent..and merely because it is a photographic compendium! The previous criticisms of this work's French language text lose sight of the fact that this book was meant primarily as a PHOTOGRAPHIC chronical and NOT as a comprehensive written history. As a long time student and amateur historian of the Waffen SS; I can state there are numerous excellent and thorough written studies covering the LSSAH in detail, and one seeking such a history should NOT purchase this work. Trang's purpose was to encapsulate the unit's trials in training pre-war up to the early years of its scope in combat through a comprehensive review of photographs taken by correspondants attached to the division. Trang first published this work from Heimdal over 10 years ago, and it appears this revised book is how he envisioned the finished form from the start. It was clearly a labor of love; and anybody who has combed through the miasma of poorly cataloged photo contact sheets in US and other similar archives abroad can attest to what patience and diligence is needed to accurately lay out such photographs to ensure their proper description and year of attribution. Irrespective of what a reader's moral point of view is concerning the Waffen SS; the LSSAH secured for itself a reputation as a premier fighting unit which was led by many courageous officers. Trang has produced a remarkable photographic work here, and I anxiously await his work on the 3rd SS Division "Totenkopf" which is due to be released in the USA in June 2008.

HASH(0x92aceb28) out of 5 stars Excellent "Historical Album" 25 Jun. 2009
By Hauptmann - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I ordered this based upon the excellent word of mouth of the Heimdal books. Heimdal is a FRENCH publisher so the text of this book is all in French. However, this book is exactly what it says it is, a photo album. There are several chapters detailing the unit's movements, but most of the book is devoted to photos. In this nearly 500 page book, there are hundreds of them. Since so many photos are crammed in this, many are somewhat small. Some photos are just a few inches wide but most are still easy to see despite their small size. I don't recall seeing any of these photos in Battle of Kharkov by Jean Restayn or Platz der Leibstandarte by George Nipe, both English-language books but which only cover Kharkov. If you are looking for photos you haven't seen before, then the Trang book is for you. Based upon this first volume, I will definitely be purchasing volume 2.

HASH(0x92a7e0d8) out of 5 stars False information by Amazon 21 Mar. 2008
By Violet Kincaid - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Amazon describes this book as being published in English. However, upon receiving it yesterday, I found out to my surprise that it is all in French. I only rated it as one-star since I can't read the book but must pick a rating to post a review. Is there an English version? Amazon needs to make the correction.

HASH(0x92c34960) out of 5 stars Thought I was an idiot, appears at least in this case I'm not! 1 April 2008
By David M. Walton - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I,as the other reviewers, was under the impression that this book was published in English. The pictures are great but I do not speak French and that is what this book is published in. I recall that Amazon said this book was in English when I ordered it. Very dissapointed!
