This CD was purchased to replace a vinyl version I hold. it is a great attribute to any Mr P fans collection and is a piece of history that reflects the Presley era very well in particular and especially the Elvis Sails section of the audio CD. I can recomend its content and overall quality and it took me back to the early stages of my interest in Presley and of course the childhood memories that kept flooding back . The prodcut is worth considering for Presley fans as well as new listeners too. In addition, the seller was quick with the delivery and the product was as described. It is a true attribute to a collection of the Kings work and audio the interviews conducted as part of the CD are a purchase on its own that capture the essense of a particular time in Presleys career. The overall CD offers the listener a true experience to be remembered as well as whats to come on the the rest of the legendary Performer volumes.

Howecver, you cannot capture the colourful Vinyl original that was distributed as as a limited edition with Presleys image pressed in to the product that could be followed with intrigue as it wizzed around the record deck. Although, as time moves on and advancements have been made we have to capture and embrace the ever evolving digital era and the enhanced flexibility and audio processing that the Compact disc has offered us as listeners since its development and arrival from phillips in 1980.

HASH(0x9a710a44) out of 5 stars A legendary album 6 Jan. 2006
By Blue Boy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Released in 1974 while Elvis was still alive, this compilation included for the first time outtakes and alternate versions of songs every fan knew by heart. It also included the master takes of some of his biggest hits.

This album was produced by Joan Deary who, at the time, was supposed to become Elvis's next producer after Felton Jarvis. Jarvis had been Elvis's own producer since 1966 but by 1974 nobody could get Elvis in the studio, not even Jarvis although RCA Records relied on him. They thought Jarvis was incompetent and they wanted to get rid of him, the record sales were becoming really bad since mid-1973 so RCA put Joan Deary in charge of Elvis's back catalogue. She did a tremendous job with LEGENDARY PERFORMER, the fans and the critics were happy and the mass audience could get another view of Elvis.

Elvis would do only three more recording sessions before his death (one in 1975, two in 1976), not showing at a fourth one on January 1977. Jarvis tried everything he could to keep his job, promising new songs and new records to RCA while Elvis did evrything he could to stop them. He was so bored at that time, full of medication, waiting for death.

This album (the first of the four volumes) did very well in the charts, selling more copies than Elvis's new records. But it did some good for his career too because just before his death his record sales began to rise again. His new albums sold more copies while the back catalogue did very well too.

It's truly a great album and I'm not sure Deary would have made a better job than Jarvis but at least she was the first person at RCA Records to take care of Elvis's musical legacy.

HASH(0x9a8d067c) out of 5 stars Not Much of A Bargain 24 Mar. 2012
By WarrenS - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
As mentioned in other reviews, the good news about this CD reissue of the 1974 album is that there is nothing wrong with the material that is included. If you plan to purchase the CD to replace the vinyl LP, you are in for a surprise. The 14 tracks on the original album are now reduced to 10 on the CD! Here is what's missing: "I Love You Because" (take 2), "Love Me" (1968 NBC TV Special), "A Fool Such As I" and "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" (1968 NBC TV Special). Also, "Trying To Get To You" is NOT the live 1968 NBC version that is on the original vinyl release. With only 10 songs, a running time of 22 minutes and no original album booklet, this budget release is no bargain. I am disappointed that RCA/BMG/Sony won't reissue the four volumes of this series with all of the tracks (as of 2012 only volumes 1 and 2 are available on CD). I would suggest that you search for other offerings out there that provide more content for your money.

HASH(0x9a376630) out of 5 stars A decent introduction to the Legendary Performer! 17 Sept. 2004
By Gitters - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Elvis A Legendary Performer Volume 1 is a fine place to get introduced to the man's music. This was the first Elvis album that I owned. While the album is extremely skimpy by today's standards, it is a good album.Out of the 10 songs two of them are excerpts from interviews, so in all reality there are only 8 songs, but among those eight songs are some of Elvis's best early recordings like Heartbreak Hotel, Don't Be Cruel,Love Me Tender, adn Can't Help Falling in Love, which I personally think some of these songs represent his strongest material, basically he was at his best during the 50's and early 60's. Some of these are the songs that drew me in to Elvis's music. There are many complations that cover his career in much more depth, but for a quick taste of Elvis's best years check out A Legendary Performer Volume 1.
