The Twilight series has made paranormal romance seem rather hundrum now. In fact it's difficult to make paranormal YA stand out. Legend Unleashed does so with quirks and foibles that make the story feel fresh yet comfortably familiar.
For example, Temperance is well aware that she suffers "hallucinations" and takes pills to keep them at bay. She relies on them for stability and it's a very nice touch to see her rely on them more and more as her world is increasingly filled with impossible things. I do wish more had been done with this idea, but t's a nice wrinkle.
This is a book that wears its Young Adult audience on its sleeve and I loved it for that. There is an enormous influx of YA titles of late and you get the feeling that a lot of writers are chasing the Twilight dollar. No such feeling here. This is true YA. It's not a dumbed-down "adult" book; it's written for its target audience. And, like all great books, it can be enjoyed by anyone.
If I have one complaint about this book it is this: it feels too rushed. M. Latimer-Ridley weave a nice world but I didn't feel I was given enough time to explore it and settle in. Events happen at a breakneck speed and even major revelations don't seem to have quite enough space to breath. It was quite a shame as I think I would have enjoyed the book a lot more if the pacing had been a bit calmer. As it was the plot always seemed to have one eye on the horizon. I'd have preferred its full attention on the moments as they unfolded.
That said, if werewolves and YA are your thing then this book is for you and I can definitely recommend it.
This book has a little bit of everything. Romance, fantasy and mystery in abundance. It's clearly the driving force that makes the book so engaging and whilst I will admit there were points and still points that have left me a tad confused, this book was undeniably a guilty pleasure. Oh and this book was gory too and exciting. It was thrilling on all kinds of levels as well as having this low level romance that bubbled throughout, but didn't take over the story.
"A bloodcurdling howl echoed throughout the cavern. Claws dug into his back, slicing through the muscles. A piercing scream ripped from his throat. Fangs nicked at his neck; the warm rush of blood blurred his vision and his head was yanked back."
On top of all the gore, mystery and adventure that happens in abundance there is the romance. Now don't be put off by this book because first appearances are very much deceiving. When you begin to read it appears to become a point where we meet a love triangle, but what makes the book so entirely loveable is how it completely eliminates this direction and surprises you in doing so. Meanwhile, enjoy the bubbling tensions and antagonisms between the characters because it is so deeply entertaining!
"Halvard stalked over to her, invading her personal space. She gasped and bumped back up against the wall away from him. His handsome face drew level with hers. He was growling.
He brushed a fingertip over her cheek, drawing back a strand of her hair. His striking amber eyes bored into hers.
"I'm not an adolescent pup. I don't show just any female affection. All you need to do is tell me to stop..."
Temperence isn't the highly intelligent super-freak that seem to have become normal or entirely stupid, she's a nice balance somewhere in-between and there was only a rare moment where I wanted to bash her head against a wall because she was so oblivious. However, I think this only makes her character more realistic and how much there was for her to unravel about the time was exciting because little pieces of information were slowly released to you to fit together a puzzle as Temperence was too. There was lots of surprising elements about Temperence that really made her a victim, but she was a strong character even though she was put into this position and I appreciated this about her. She was a very likeable character.
The plot for this story is eccentric and weird, but this makes is so engaging and creative. It drew me away from the real world and really immersed me in every element of Temperance's story and all the little associations and mysteries of Carwick that surprise you at every turn. One of my favourite little quotes to share.
"Little Alice here is taking a trip down the rabbit-hole with you then," Winthrop mused."
Overall, I would recommend this book without a doubt and suggest that everybody get themselves a copy of Legend Unleashed because M. Latimer-Ridley have some real talent and I cannot wait for more from them!

M. Latimer-Ridley | Legend Unleashed
Legend Unleashed contained everything that I love in a book! There was mystery and intrigue, adventure with blood pumping battle scenes and lets not forget a touch of romance. This book, in my opinion, was incredibly well written. So well in fact that I had no trouble imagining the surrounding of the underground city (yes underground city...how cool is that!) The pace of the book was excellent! However there were moments where I thought certain events just happened too easily. Although I adored this story I just couldn't help but wonder why Temperance just accepted certain realities and events without really questioning or disagreeing with them. Like running of with a 'stranger' after just witnessing him use magic to fend of several werewolves....although he is smexy, I think i'd be a little bit more hesitant. Maybe try escaping a few more times. I did pin it down, however, to her always having a little inkling that she was different because of her inner need to take her pills. And she did question reality a lot, just not enough in my opinion.
I absolutely adored Adora and Pratchett, and wished that my parents would show more of a childish and eccentric side. Who wouldn't love a Wiccan mother who made hash brownies and threw nudist parties...okay maybe not the nudest part, but a secret stash of fun times and a predictor of good fortune right in your house. It would be like Christmas everyday. I can't wait to learn more about Temperance's parents for there is sure to be a great story there.
Let's talk about the plot. I honestly can't complain or shake my fist at anyone for the way this book turned out. I was hooked. So hooked that I didn't want to get up off the couch to use the loo. Let's all raise a hand if you have ever been frustrated when the two male leads are both perfect for the protagonist, and yet you know that she only picks one? Well this book has a unique way of dealing with that problem. Cue Halvard and Alastair. As male leads their up there with the most profound. Who doesn't love a guy who isn't afraid to throw a fist or swing a witty response. Best of both worlds right here (wink, wink) The only thing that bugged me about Alastair was that he would leave Temperance at the most inconvenient times...maybe I so desperately wanted them to get all mushy mushy that I was blinded by his need to save their butts due to the impending black spot on their hands.
If you enjoy the idea of opposing forces battling to the death, secrets within secrets within clocks, and witty characters that leave you chuckling out loud - stop what you are doing now and pick up this book. 'Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock' no time to waist. Slip into this rabbit whole young Alice, you won't be disappointed with this Wonderland. Happy Reading!
The environment is cozy and magical at the same time, blending our mundane perceptions of reality with a fantastical underground mythology that amps up the ante in the grand scheme of things. We as readers are led through this enchanting tale, discovering fresh new takes on our favorite classic supernaturals. Its a quick read, and leaves you sad to see it end, but its worth every minute. Carve out a few from your schedule and sit down with this book. You'll love it!
Imagine an underground city filled with supernatural creatures. A boy who has been pushed in your direction for romance, even though you're not interested. Then that same boy is implicated with you on a murder. So, Temperance and Alistair begin to work together to clear their name. Their journey takes them to the most unexpected of places and they meet eccentric characters who may have their best interests at heart, and then again, they may not.
I really enjoyed this novel. It's fast paced, has a vividly drawn world and the characters are memorable. Magic, mayhem, romance, stellar dialogue and impeccable writing mesh together into a phenomenal read. Highly recommend!
