This is an old school ghost story depending on subtle acting, excellent direction and a moody, chilly atmosphere that rarey lets up. No cgi here but the viewer's imagination is given permission to see what it wants to see. The themes are of the basic elemental of land, of history, of fear & dread and of loss. Two parallel stories of mothers who have lost their daughters 250 years apart. The central figure of the father who has come to the small community and will change the lives of all who live there is an unusual addition to the genre as it is seen that it is he who is to be punished by having his family torn apart.
The film has a predictability about it that prevents its development into terror as in the Pang Bros The Messengers which deals with the same territory, it does however have much to recommend it most especially the performance by Julie Delpy as the traumatised modern day mother haunted by the past and dreading the future.
We are all haunted by our pasts. we can absorb them or make them into protective carapaces, use them as defences; excuses or in worst case scenarios as weapons

This film caused me to waste a valuable Sunday evening. Eighties background music, rubbish special effects (again, very eighties-esque), no atmosphere, awful acting and unconvincing characters. The only way this ghost story was scary was in how terrible it was.
