The only reason I did not give 5 stars was because the descriptions were quite repetitive, but necessarily so, because that's how it was. The book vividly portrayed the incredible courage and devotion of each crew member. Over and over again that was the theme running through the book.
I was a boy at the start of the war, and can remember, through a boys eyes, and a boys perspective, those days. ? number of our aircraft are missing, was a familiar report. We/I did not and could not comprehend the stress and suffering involved in that phrase. Even when, late in the war I, with 2 of my friends saw a Lancaster crash in a field, after seeing it struggle to clear the houses and factory, to finally crash and break into 2 pieces, with the rear gunner being the only survivor, and seeing him being helped to walk away, by farm workers, with the top half of him covered with his parachute, is a memory that 75 years cannot erode. So the action in the book, although repetitive, is a wonderful tribute to those brave YOUNG men. The poem at the end was a heart wrenching read.

This book is a riveting account told in ten big chapters of the young RAF crews who flew Lancasters in RAF Bomber Command from 1942 to the end of the war in Europe in April 1945. It is unique in that the story is told using first person accounts from RAF aircrew and German night fighter crews who fought each other on raids on occupied Europe and Germany from 1942 onwards. Details of what it was like to be on the receiving end in Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne etc are also included. A whole host of incredible first-hand accounts by British, Commonwealth, American and German air crews permeate the action and describe the aerial battles as only they can. This unique book also includes many accounts and photos that have not previously been seen before while the rich mix of combat accounts from all sides are brought together for the first time in one volume.

Another reluctant review which starts with a confession : I'm not the greatest fan of some of Mr Bowman's, or of Pen&Sword's, other books. And at first sight, I thought this likely to be a 're-hash' of 'Battles With The Nachtjagd', a previous ( and very expensive ) book co-written by Martin Bowman and Theo Boiten.
Certainly, the earlier book has been quarried for some accounts in this one which also uses many of the same chapter headings. But this is actually quite a different book ( which I'd guess may use research which wasn't used before, or has been carried out subsequently ).
It's largely constructed around first-hand accounts which, as always with Bomber Command veterans reminiscenses, are superb to read. It's also good to read the accounts of opposing Luftwaffe crews ( thanks to Theo Boiten's research which is credited in the acknowledgements ). There's also a very good selection of photos - some are admittedly very familiar, but there are many I'd never seen before. Yet again, I found one or two little errors/typos - don't publishers have proof-readers any more ? There's no bibliography, but there are useful notes at the end of each chapter. One major niggle from me - did we really need the Dam busters story to be re-told again ?
However, this is a large and very nicely-produced book ; in that respect probably the nicest since Francis Mason's old 'Avro Lancaster'.
Rather expensive at full price, but very browsable and - dare I say it? - it'd make a great Christmas gift. Overall - I'm glad I bought it !

This is a tribute and testament to those 55.000 young men who laid down their lives for our country and its way of life and the freedoms we enjoy today. We should also venerate and respect those who who survived their operations, under terrible conditions. Many of them who are no longer with us. They truly lived up to the motto of our service, PER ARDUA AD ASTRA. I commend this book.
