Legally Charming (Ever After #1) by Lauren Smith
3 stars!!!

“Sometimes a girl wants to know if a man will fight for her. So if you want her bad enough, fight for her.”

Lauren Smith is a new to me author and I was drawn to this book because of “Legal” being in the title. I do love books set in that domain and hot lawyers are definitely easy to read about. Legally Charming is a book I enjoyed, it was what I deem an “easy read,” everything was nice, sweet with a little angst and a lot of insta love.

Felicity Hart was a likeable character in so far as she was sweet, innocent and naïve, but for me the damsel in distress act did get a little old after a while. For someone extremely intelligent, I found her very flaky and she was just a little too wet for me to warm up to. Felicity was very insecure about herself, especially her curves, and she couldn’t see the beautiful woman underneath despite who and how many times people told her otherwise. Felicity was however extremely independent which was a fantastic trait, even if rather annoying at times when you just wanted her to accept help when she really needed it. Overall though, I liked her.

Jared Redmond was your typical red blooded, alpha lawyer. Jared worked all the hour’s god sends to further his career and hopefully make partner in the firm that is owned by his ex-girlfriend’s father (cue drama). He wasn’t a defender or prosecutor but worked in real estate law which is apparently just as demanding. Jared had no time for romance or relationships, his work ethic had only one track, focus, focus, focus. Jared was extremely good at his job and that is the way he wanted it to stay or at least did until he wandered in on a sleeping Felicity in his bed.

Legally Charming has a delicious fairytale feel to the narrative from the beginning that is only enhanced as the story progresses.

Felicity is a shy, introvert and more than a little awkward unless she is discussing her one true passion, art. Highly career driven as a result of her poor upbringing, there are hints to a trauma in her past but this aspect of the plot is completely overshadowed by the romance within Legally Charming, it's as if nothing else exists but the developing relationship between Felicity and Jared.

Jared is also highly career driven, having poured his heart and soul into his career up to this point in his life. Little realising he has been channeling his energy into his career in order to escape his innate loneliness. Something he hadn't even realised about himself prior to his meeting Felicity.

There is no denying the attraction that simmers between Jared and Felicity, reaching a mutual understanding that their relationship is finite due to Felicity's career goals, they embark on a relationship. Neither of them expecting to fall as hard or as deep as they do, yet they are both determined to achieve their individual goals.

Additional drama takes the shape of Jared's boss, who also happens to be the father of his ex-girlfriend. Said boss is not above manipulation in order to have Jared exactly where he wants him, even if it is detrimental to his relationship.

As their feelings deepen Jared and Felicity have to acknowledge the effect their relationship has on their lives. With something so positive between the two of them it is hard to deny the new future they desire. I loved how fate stepped in to push them both to their happy ever after which Jared takes full control over and sweeps Felicity off her feet.

Legally Charming has a high swoon factor with very little angst to detract from the fairytale happily ever after ♥

This was an enjoyable romantic read with very little angst; even the inevitable glitches were surmountable with minimal fuss....written with more than a nod to Cinderella and tales of old with knights in shining armour and damzels in distress... this was a contemporary romantic novel at the heart of which was Felicity who meets and immediately succumbs to the charms of Jared ; although this was a full length novel the attraction between the main characters was definitely instantaneous... I am not a fan of instalust however in the circumstance the response was in keeping with the fairy tale theme where heroes and heroines fall in love and marry after only one true love kiss...

The story held my attention; the relationship between Felicity and Jared was believable even although there were moments when it was too sugary sweet for me; on occasions Jared was just a little too perfect and Felicity was just a little too naive, almost to the point of being irritating.....the subsidiary characters contributed another layer of warmth and interest to the story; I particularly liked Layla, Felicity's best friend, who added humour and sass and her relationship with Jared's brother was worthy of it's own book... as were the lives of Jared 's college friends Thad and Angelo....

Despite the immediate attraction between the protagonists this ended up being a slow burner in terms of romance with surreptitious looks and tentative touching worthy of Miss Bennet and Mr Darcy; even when things started to heat up the couple did the typical thing of ignoring the signs and refusing to acknowledge their feelings which was more than a little frustrating.....fortunately when Felicity and Jared got their act together things turned satisfactorily steamy....

This was a sweet, romantic book...which provided a touch of escapism.....This book was reviewed for Summer's Eve Reads.
