Product description

This is the Lee Big Stopper Neutral Density 10.0 Filter (100mm Glass) [BS10100U2] By greatly extending exposure times the Big Stopper has the effect of allowing anything that is moving in your image to become blurred or ghost like, for example clouds, waterfalls, rivers, and the sea. The filter can also be used on cityscapes to blur people or on roads and motorways to blur traffic. The Big Stopper can be used in conjunction with other filters such as Neutral Density Graduated Filters. Other filters should be set up and positioned in the filter holder as normal before using the Big Stopper, remembering to keep the slot in the filter holder nearest the lens empty for the Big Stopper. How to use the Big Stopper Before fitting the Big Stopper, first compose your image. Take a meter reading without the filter in place, and set your desired aperture and shutter speed. Multiply your exposure by a factor of ten. For example, if your meter reading suggests an exposure of 1/125sec at f/11, with the Big Stopper fitted, your exposure becomes eight seconds at f/11. If your meter reading suggests an exposure of two seconds at f/11, with the Big Stopper fitted, your exposure becomes a whopping 32 minutes. With the Big Stopper inserted into the slot nearest the lens, attach the filter holder as usual and make your exposure. Always use the sturdiest tripod you can when making long exposures, and take care not to knock the camera or tripod. Cover your viewfinder before releasing the shutter to avoid light encroaching onto the sensor or film and causing flare.

Very well made 10stop 2mm thick glass filter with foam gasket to help cancel light coming in from the edges - I'd recommend placing a hand around it to protect from light leaks, and note that the filter should be in the slot closest to the camera. Comes complete with a very handy timings conversion card small enough to fit in your wallet. The tin, whilst ok becomes pretty much irrelevant as you'll almost definitely be wanting a filter pouch of some sort, these are relatively cheap at £25+ depending upon what brand, and these are fine for storing the filter. I add cardboard at each end of the pouch for extra protection, along with a single sachet of silica gel.

As for the filter itself, it works wonderfully well, with a (correctable) slight blue colour cast. I've always been a B+W screw in filter user for a long time, but wanted something quicker to stack. For reference the 77mm B+W 10 stop is also a similar price, if you don't want to purchase a LEE filter kit just for a big stopper, then I can highly recommend that and you can save yourself a wad of cash.

Note that Lee also do a 15stop ND filter 'Lee Super Stopper' which is extreme, but perhaps worth investigating before purchasing this.

Always happy to answer any questions about this product, or the lee kit in general (I also use the 105mm polariser with adaptor, single step up ring, and 24mm lens on FF with no vignetting). I remember feeling a touch out of my depth understanding what I needed way back when, in retrospect everything is very straightforward, but do always feel free to ask.

This is the best big stopper, having used a cheaper one. I think it is a pity that it actually costs £200 to be able to use it because you have to buy the foundation kit and the lens ring both of which are ridiculously expensive for what they are.

This filter is expensive but is in a totally different class to all the other filters that I have owned.
